Animal Profile

Pretty Pickle

Hello, my name is Pretty Pickle. My animal id is #244574. I am a male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/29/2025.

Pretty Pickle is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. He is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for his mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid bite/scratch incidents.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. Pretty Pickle tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. A volunteer writes: Found all by his lonesome on a second floor landing, Pretty Pickle might look rough around the edges. But don't let that tough mug fool you. This sweet tuxie comes right to the front of his cat condo to solicit pettings, giving gentle cheek rubs in return. He's a fan of squeeze-up treats, and slow blinking is his love language. At times he can get overstimulated, so Pretty Pickle would appreciate a potential pet parent who can read cat body language and know when he needs some alone time. We don't know Pretty Pickle's backstory, but we know his comfort with humans and love of affection means he has what it takes to be part of a loving forever home. Meet Pretty Pickle at the Care Center today!

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

KNOWN HISTORY:: Pretty Pickle was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 1/3/26 FB73 Pretty Pickle is laying on top of his den in a loaf position, pupils slightly dilated, coming to the front of the kennel to greet the handler as they approach and open the kennel door. He allows all petting, head bunting and leaning into it as he is pet. He periodically will pull back when petting down his shoulders and back, backing away and lip licking with dilated pupils. He recovers quickly and returns to the front of the kennel, continuing to head bunt and lean into petting on the head and cheeks. Later in the evening, handler observes him hissing and swatting at an ACS staff member as they attempt to clean his kennel. 1/4/26 FB32 Lying down in loaf position on top of den with head and ears forward. Sniffs treats offered, welcomes petting on the head. Leans in for cheek rubs and gently head bunts for more petting. When stroking his body, he turns his head looks back at my hand. Continues to tolerate more petting and cheek rubs. 1/5/26 FB73 Pretty Pickle is laying on top of his den, coming forward to greet the handler with head bunts when the kennel door is opened. He leans into petting on the head and cheeks, head bunting while pet. When petting is attempted down his shoulders and back, he tolerates it but tenses slightly and looks back at the handler's hand. He continues to allow petting on the head and cheeks without issue. 1/7/26 ACFR Pretty Pickle was resting in loaf position on top of his den when approached. He slow blinks at the handler and begins to stretch and stand up. He jumps off the den and rubs his head and body against the handler’s hand. He allows petting in the top of head, cheek, chin and body. He meows and purrs softly for the handler as well. 1/12/26 Fb73 Pretty Pickle is at the front of the kennel, meowing softly as the handler approaches. He initially allows and leans into all petting, head bunting the handler's hand as he is pet, but after several seconds he begins to show signs of overstimulation, turning and swatting at the handler's hands, not breaking skin. Interaction is ended to reduce overstimulation. 1/17/26 Vol. Was sitting and facing forward when approached. I stepped away briefly. Came back and dinner was just given. Was eating dinner on perch. Left dry treats nearby. Ate a little bit of squeeze up that I had put in tray. Leaned away if try to pet with scratcher tool.  Ate the offered squeeze up on scratcher tool. Allowed petting by hand and gave cheek rubs. Ate squeeze up on scratcher tool and directly from tube. Pawed at my hand with claws out but no broken glove/skin.  GAN FOR CONTINUATION

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Social,Sweet

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: There is a scratch history that occurred while a staff member was cleaning Pretty Pickle's kennel. He was at the front of the kennel with a neutral body and had allowed the handler to take the litterbox from the back of the kennel and clean around him. At one point, the handler reached in front of Pretty Pickle to clean some litter and food from the kennel floor, and he swatted at her hand, leaving two scratches.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to overstimulation and potential to escalate an adult only home is recommended.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Pretty Pickle is laying on top of his den, pupils dilated, meowing softly, and coming to the front of the kennel as the assessor approaches. When the kennel door is opened, he head bunts their hand, allowing and leaning into petting on the head, cheeks, and down his shoulders. When petting down his back he is tolerant of it briefly before freezing and looking back at the assessor's hands. Petting is stopped and after a few seconds Pretty Pickle begins tail flicking before stress meowing and swatting at the assessor with claws, not breaking skin. Pickup is not attempted due to behavior and interaction is ended to reduce FAS.
