Apollo
Hello, my name is Apollo . My animal id is #259730. I am a desexed male blonde dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/17/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - too active.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormApollo is at risk due to behavior concerns. Despite best efforts, Apollo has not acclimated to his time in care. Apollo is reported to show concerning levels of arousal including heavy panting, barking, inability to settle, and significant leash biting. His leash biting both in and out of kennel make it difficult for him to be handled safely. Apollo has shown concerning levels of dog reactivity. During his assessment, he begins to bark and muzzle punch the door when hearing dogs bark in the neighboring room and will snap at another dog's paw when meeting during a dog greet. According to his previous owner(s), he is social, affectionate, playful, and loves bath time. Medically, Apollo is apparently healthy.

Apollo was first surrendered to the care center as a stray in July 2026 with no known history, and was returned to the shelter by his adopter in October 2026 for behavioral reasons. His previous adopters describe Apollo as an active, playful, social dog who will give you his paw when seeking affection, and loves balls and bath time. At the care center, he has been social and affiliative with staff, though has shown a low threshold for arousal, engaging in kennel fighting and intense leash biting on being removed from his kennel. He is also reported to lunge at dogs, cats, and moving vehicles on leash. Due to these concerns, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Summary:: Apollo arrived at the care center as an owner surrender, and is noted to lunges at unfamiliar dogs; no experience with familiar dogs 10/25/26 Apollo is introduced to a novel female while off leash. He greets with a forward frame, and will display some arousal at the gate, slight hackling along his spine, moving along the gate to solicit. When meeting face to face, Apollo pulls hard towards the female, highly aroused as he greets and nips at her front paw (no broken skin). The female yelps and Apollo's teeth can be heard clacking together as he is pulled away by handler. 10/24/26: Apollo greets a novel female dog through a barrier with raised hackles along his back and rear. The novel female displays significant fearful body language with a tucked tail but remains at the gate. Apollo maintains a loose body and alternates between sniffing around the yard and independently returning to the gate to greet. 7/17/26: Apollo briefly greets a novel female dog off leash at the care center. Upon entering the yard, Apollo immediately displays reactive behavior, shaking a toy held in his mouth while fixating on the novel female from a distance. The novel female approaches the gate with a loose body, sniffing through the barrier. Apollo then begins to vocalize and growl toward the novel female. As the interaction continues, the novel female also begins to vocalize, and staff move her away as Apollo's behavior becomes increasingly intense. Apollo remains aroused throughout the interaction.
Summary (5):: 11/02/26: Apollo is jumping and hard barking at his kennel door as handler approaches. He continues to jump and hard bark at the door after the handler offers treats and he eats them. He is able to be leashed as he intensely tugs at toy that the handler offers. Once leashed, he then bolts out of kennel and drops the toy and continues to pull while heavy panting on the way outside for a walk. While on the way to the yard, he continues to pull hard ahead. In the yard, he is able to settle as he explores around with sniffing. He would constantly sit at the fence to watch dogs passing by on the sidewalk. He is able to be redirected with treats. He is comfortable approaching the handler and would sit to receive treats. He would constantly lunge and try to catch birds that would fly into the yard. He pulls hard on the way back to the kennel and is able to quickly enter when treats are tosses inside. He then quickly spins around and grabs the hander's leash and refuses to let go as he tugs at it. The handler then let’s go of the leash and he is able to be distracted as the handler tosses more treats inside. When the handler comes back with a hook, het then attempts to grab the leash again as they quickly slide it out. 11/1/26: Apollo is jumping and placing his front paws on the kennel door. Handler uses a toy to try and leash Apollo, but Apollo gets the toy. A second handler has come to help and they hold the toy while original handler leashes Apollo. It takes a little while but he is leashed and pulled from kennel. Before Apollo gets out of the care center he has already lost the toy. Apollo pulls hard once he dropped the toy. Apollo is taken to the backyard for his walk. Handler walks around the area with Apollo allowing him to sniff and then pick when play pen they will enter. Handler works with Apollo on the touch command, but Apollo proves to be too distracted by everything he sees on the street. After some time passes handler returns Apollo to his kennel with no issue. 10/28/26: ACS handlers report that Apollo is leash biting significantly when they attempt to leash him. They attempted to use toys and treats. He is observed to be leashed by a CBS handler. The handler offers Apollo a toy which he will promptly pull into the kennel before the handler can thread it through their leash loop. Due to Apollo tugging and shaking the toy intensely, the handler has to carefully switch hands to thread the toy through the leash to be able to get it over Apollo’s head. This is done successfully and the toy is dropped by the handler. Apollo exits the crate quickly, dropping the toy and will immediately begin to kennel fight with a dog in a neighboring kennel. He is then bunny hopped out of the kennel room and continues attempting to kennel fight with the surrounding kennels.
Summary (6):: 10/25/26: Apollo is hard barking and jumping up at his crate door as handler approaches. He continues to hard bark and jump at the door as the handler unlocks it and then attempts to grab the handler's leash. He is able to be quickly distracted with treats, but he then goes to grab the leash again. He is then offered a toy, and he tugs on the toy as the handler gets their leash loop over his head. Once leashed, he then pulls hard while heavy panting on the way outside to the play yard for play group. In the yard, he is aroused and would bark while heavy pant as he greets the other dog at the gate. When the gate is opened, he then lunges and snaps towards the other dog's foot causing the other dog to yelp. Please see dog to dog notes foe more details. He pulls hard on the way back to his crate and is able to enter when treats are tossed inside. 10/24/26 (D2D): Apollo is lying down at back of kennel as handler approached. When handler opened door Apollo came forward and was leashed using a treat lure. He was taken to the back yard for play group (Please see dog to dog notes for details). Walking thru the halls he had a neutral body and pulled moderately to hard at times. After his playgroup session he was returned to kennel with no issue. 10/21/26( BA note): Apollo is standing at the front of his kennel, hard barking and displaying barrier reactivity toward other dogs while still inside his kennel. As the handler approaches, Apollo will avoid the leash. The handler will use a toy to redirect him and successfully place the leash around his neck. He will then be brought to the assessment room, where he will allow all handling. He will run but become aroused and begin leash biting. During the knock, he will bark. He will back away when the toy is presented. When dogs outside the assessment room bark, Apollo will hard bark at the door and muzzle punch it. For more information, see Behavioral Assessment.
Summary (7):: 7/24/26: Apollo is observed to be leash biting and tugging at the leash as an ACS handler attempts to leash him to take him outside for a walk. He is also observed to begin snapping and nipping at the handlers hand when they grab his collar. A behavior team handler is able to assist and he is then leashed while being distracted with treats. 7/19/26 (playgroup): Apollo is at the front of the kennel barking as the handler approaches. He will loosen as the handler offers some treats but will not take them as he is leashed. As he is brought out of kennel he will attempt to kennel fight with the dog below him and will attempt to pull into the room as they exit. He is then brought up to the play yard where his collar is clipped to a leash and he will approach the gate to hard bark at the novel dog and will continue to try to bark after picking up a toy in his mouth and as he is removed from the yard. When returning to his kennel, he will attempt to kennel fight again as he is lifted into kennel. He is secured safely. (see dog-dog for more info) 07/15/26(BA Note): Apollo is sitting at the front of his kennel with a loose and wiggly body and is brought to the assessment room. He readily socializes with the handlers and willingly allows a collar and drag leash to be placed on him. Apollo hard barks toward the door in response to hearing other dogs barking outside the room but otherwise allows all handling. During the run portion, he follows without becoming aroused, though he jumps up on the handler while running. He does not respond to the knock stimulus. During the toy portion, he grips the toy, shakes it, and maintains a loose body throughout. For more information, see Behavioral Assessment.
Date of intake:: 10/17/2026
Summary:: Very friendly, active and outgoing
Date of initial:: 10/22/2026
Summary:: Loose and wiggly, highly food-motivated
ENERGY LEVEL:: Apollo is described as a high energy dog by his previous adopters. He is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 13): Due to Apollo's low threshold for arousal and his dog reactivity, we recommend an adult only home at this time. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to Apollo's behavior in playgroup, we recommend he goes home as a single pet, and does not visit dog parks. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns in the home and care center environment, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: In previous handling assessments, Apollo persistently jumped on handlers and once pawed at their face. We recommend that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on basic manners / poor impulse control. Low threshold for arousal | Leash biting: During his time at the care center, Apollo has shown high levels of arousal around being removed from his kennel, engaging in intense leash biting and kennel fighting. During his handling assessment, he moved around the room at a fast pace, barking at a knock on the door, and jumping up and grabbing at the leash while jogging with the handler. He may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and force-free, positive reinforcement-based training may help her to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded. Please see handout on Arousal. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Apollo has displayed a concerning level of reactivity towards other dogs while in kennel, while on leash, and when being returned to his kennel. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
