Bonnie
Hello, my name is Bonnie. My animal id is #245388. I am a female brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 1/11/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormBonnie is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Bonnie arrived at the Care Center as a stray with no known history. Upon intake Bonnie was noted to be highly anxious, however was treat receptive and allowed handling for a medical exam. Despite efforts to keep her comfortable, Bonnie has been showing a decreasing threshold for arousal and increased reactivity. Bonnie has been observed to fixate on random inanimate objects such as kuranda beds, fencing, and equipment; grabbing hold and shaking. Bonnie has also been observed recently to be reactive to dogs, growling with a tense body moving past kennels and when seeing dogs in the play-yard. Bonnie is somewhat redirectable with treats but often reverts back to showing reactive behaviors or attempting to grab hold of objects she is fixated on. During her handling assessment Bonnie was highly social, wiggly, and allowed all contact. Medically, Bonnie noted to be overweight, superficial pyoderma, and is receiving treatment for CIRDC.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy!

Summary:: 1/21/26: Bonnie rushed forward to the gate to greet another dog. She pushes and paws at the gate while vocalizing.
Summary (5):: 01/22/26: Bonnie is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches, she jumps at the kennel door as handler unlocks the door. She is distracted using treats and is removed from kennel, she pulls moderately toward the dogs she passes in kennel until reaching the hall. She has to wait in the hall momentarily due to their being multiple dogs in the hallway, she is exuberant and frantic and lets out a single bark toward one of the dogs before being offered treats. She has difficulty settling but eventually stops and sits on handlers foot while they wait for dogs to clear the way. After a bit she reaches the street, once outside she is exuberant and pulls moderately so handler tosses her a toy which she engages with and holds onto briefly. After a bit she drops the toy and walks with handler for a while, stopping to sniff frequently and walking past people on the street with minimal interest. She is walked for a while without issue besides exuberantly walking before being brought back inside. She is returned to kennel without issue and interaction is ended.
Summary (6):: 1/21/26 (For dog-dog): Bonnie initially loose bodied at front of kennel, she barks briefly, takes a treat. When leashing Bonnie pushes her head into opening of kennel door, however is leashed using a treat lure. Upon exiting Bonnie initially pulls hard out of room, she begins to turn head toward kennels, barking, and then pull with moderate pressure turning toward kennels. Leash pressure is used to direct her away. Bonnie enters vestibule for interaction (See dog-dog notes for details). She is receptive to treats but immediately attempts to fixate and pull hard toward the dog on the other side of the greeting fence with tense body. After interaction, Bonnie is walked to a play yard that has an empty yard in between her and another dog. She sniffs around, is notably panting, and pulling hard erratically in different direction. Bonnie stands on hindlegs facing the yard with a dog two yards over, and is now biting on the leg of a karanda bed that is leaning on the fence. She is pulled away. When attempting to exit, Bonnie grabs hold of an agility tube (it is flat, and stored behind a storage closet), she grabs and shakes several times, using treats Bonnie is distracted and lets go. Bonnie is walked back to MACC and pulls hard back to kennel.
Summary (7):: 1/21/26: Bonnie has been reported to biting and shaking items in the yard. She is redirected with either treats or leash pressure, but Bonnie fixates on the same items again, such as a kuranda bed and the yard fence. 1/15/26: Bonnie is at the front of her kennel with a wiggly body as the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and brought out the kennel. While walking out the building, Bonnie sniffs and jumps on a staff member standing by. On the street, she walks ahead with moderate to mild pulling, with brief moments of hard pulling. Bonnie shows no interest in dogs in passersby. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Bonnie to her kennel with ease. 1/12/26- Bonnie is at the middle of her kennel with a loose and wiggly body, when handler tries to leash she pushes her head against her door trying to get out. Handler uses treats and she is leashed. She pulls hard exiting the building to the street. She is social with handler and has no reaction to any stimuli. She is bouncy with handler, occasionally jumping on them. Handler presents treats and she jumps down. She is taken for her assessment, she is social with handlers. Jumping on them seeking treats. Handler tosses a toy and she chases it, grabbing it then drops it. She is leashed and returned to kennel without issue.

Summary:: Fearful, did take treats and allowed for full exam
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Bonnie so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to poor impulse controls we recommend an adult only home. Place with New Hope Partner: Due to Bonnie's decreasing threshold for arousal resulting in fixating on random objects, we reccomend placement with and experienced New Hope Partner.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Bonnie has been obsvered to jump up on handlers often. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Anxiety: During intake Bonnie was obsvered to be whining and vocalizing. During her assessment she was obsvered to be panting heavily throughout the interaction. If Bonnie displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On-Leash Reactivity: At the care center, Bonnie has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them, barking and growling. Bonnie may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see hand-out for On-leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Low threshold for arousal: Bonnie has been observed to grab hold of random objects when out for walks. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Bonnie to remain calm on walks and when exciting things are around. She should be rewarded with treats when calm. If she escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Bonnie. Please see hand-out on Arousal.
