Eight

Hello, my name is Eight. My animal id is #226155. I am a male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 5/2/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Eight is on the at-risk list for behavior concerns. Eight arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. During his stay in the care center Eight has been observed to jump up and tug the leash into kennel when handlers are attempting to leash him. When leaving kennel Eight has been observed to intensely cage fight with the neighboring dog, noted to contort his body and push of the wall. When returning to kennel Eight is observed to spin towards the handlers and snap at them. Medically, he apparently has ottis externa, and a wound.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

Summary:: 5/20/25: Eight greets another dog at the fence with a tense body while hard barking. He then muzzle punches the fence.

Summary (5):: 5/19/25: Eight is at the front of kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. Treats were used as a lure to leash him. As he is removed from his kennel he intensely kennel fights. Treats are scattered and continuously tossed as he is taken to the yard. In the yard he is kept on leash. Handlers take turns giving treats and cueing for a sit, Eight is receptive. When spotting a dog walking past, Eight lunges, pulls very hard towards them as he scrambles, and is hard barking. Handlers have difficulty redirecting him as they use leash pressure to pull him away. Eight is observed to jump up with an open mouth towards handler holding the leash on several occasions. He is returned to kennel without issue.

Summary (6):: 5/16/25: Eight is laying down in his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be slowly leashed while being distracted by treats. Once leashed, he pulls hard out of his kennel and tries to lunge towards the dog in kennel next to him. He was able to follow the treat trail, that the second handler following would throw on the ground for him on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, he would pull hard ahead while walking side to side to side constantly. He would reproach the second handler and stare to receive treats. He was comfortable receiving treats from the handler hat was handling him as well. On the way back to his kennel, he continues to pull hard ahead as the second handler would walk in front of him and toss treats for him eat. He tried to pull towards the kennel room next to him before reaching his. The second handler tosses treats into his kennel and he goes straight in and is unleashed with ease. He tries to slowly bite at the leash, but in distracted by being offered more treats. 5/14/25: Handler removes Eight’s kennel blocker and he begins to jump on the door with his front paws. As handler attempts to leash, Eight will grab the leash and begin to tug on it intensely. A treat is used to redirect his attention, which works. A treat lure is then attempted to leash him, which works. Once Eight is removed from the kennel, he immediately pulls hard towards the neighboring kennel and is then muscled out of the room. He would pull hard down the hallway and all the way towards the yard. Once outside in a play-pen, Eight would remain tense. He spotted a dog in the pen over and wouldn’t settle until the dog was out of sight. He is then taken towards a back play-pen where he would constantly sniff around and suddenly pull hard towards the back of the pen. This goes on for a couple of minutes, once he is settled he is then clipped and taken back inside of the building. He would pull hard towards his kennel. Once he enters his kennel he would immediately turn towards the handler, jump up at eye level and would snap at the leash to pull in. Handler then tosses a treat overhead which he follows and the leash is removed. Interaction is then shortly ended. 5/14/25: ACS report that when Eight is returning to kennel he will jump and snap at the handler and then begin biting the leash. Eight was able to be redirected using treats. Signage saying to toss treats when returning to kennel was added.

Summary (7):: 05/09/25: ACS report Eight will intensely kennel fight with dogs he passes. A member of K9 behavior notices a kennel closer to the front which would make it easier to remove Eight due to there being less dogs to pass when exiting with Eight. When attempting to remove Eight he jumps upward toward the leash, he is leashed successfully and begins pulling towards the dogs he passes immediately. Eight attempts to push off the wall while jumping on his hind legs. He contorts his body in the air and flails around briefly before handler guides him into his new kennel. He attempts to mouth the leash after entering kennel and turning quickly but misses. Interaction is ended shortly after. 05/08/25: Eight is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed while distracted with treats and taken to the street for his walk. He pulls forward hard and attempts to approach people while walking on the street, he will stop to sniff during his walk and uses the bathroom while outside. He is then brought back inside for his assessment, Eight pants heavily in the assessment room and jumps on handlers intensely. He attempts to leash bite multiple times during his assessment and takes treats with hard pressure. He allows collaring and when attempting to pet him he becomes slightly over-aroused. After a bit he is brought back to kennel and pulls toward dogs he passes before entering kennel. 5/6/25: Eight is at the front of his pop-up crate barking and with a wiggly body when the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and taken out of his kennel where he then gets excited heading towards the door. He is easily taken out to the driveway. Due to being a lepto suspect, his walking time outside is limited. Eight, explores the floor and relives himself and is taken back into the ER room. Eight is then easily put back into his kennel with ease. 5/3/25: When behavior assisted in bringing the dog in to the care center, he would jump up towards the leash but focus on treats when tossed. He placed his front paws into the kennel but would not step in further even when treats were tossed. Handler had to muscle him into the kennel.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Eight so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to lack of basic manners and mouthie behaviors we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Eight has been observed to jump up on handler in a social seeming manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Mouthiness: Eight has been observed to take treats with hard pressure. We recommend giving treats with a flat hand and to use force-free, reward-based training methods to teach Eight to take treats with a softer mouth. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Fearful Defensive: Eight has been observed to jump up and snap at the handler when returning to kennel. We recommend never playing with bare hands, always with a toy, and ending play or attention whenever Eight puts teeth on skin. They should be rewarded with attention and treats when they stop and/or when they are seeking attention in alternate ways. Please see handout on Mouthiness. On Leash Reactive: During intake Eight was observed to hard bark and lunge towards dogs in the lobby. In the kennel room he is observed to cage fight intensely with the neighboring dog, noted to contort his body in the air and push off the wall. Eight will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Eight has been observed to jump up and attempt to bite the leash. Throughout his stay Eight has been observed to bite and tug the leash intensely into kennel. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
