Xena
Hello, my name is Xena. My animal id is #238800. I am a female gray dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/12/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.
Xena is at risk for behavior reasons. Xena was initially highly fearful entering the shelter but is warming up towards staff. Despite her being more social, she has begun leash biting exiting her kennel. Xena has a bite to the other resident dog and has shown barrier frustration when other dogs pass her kennel. She should be the only pet in an adult only home. Medically, she has some dental disease but is an otherwise healthy dog.

👑 Meet Xena 👑 Xena is highly fearful in the care center, currently allowing only minimal handling. The shelter environment is overwhelming for her, which means she will require a slow, structured decompression period and gradual introductions to new people once adopted. Her fearfulness in the shelter may not reflect who she will be in a stable, loving home, but it does mean she needs an adopter who is patient, gentle, and committed to moving at her pace. With consistency, time, and a quiet household, Xena has every potential to regain her confidence and show the affectionate, playful, and devoted dog she has always been. She will thrive with someone who understands her sensitivities and is ready to give her the supportive, understanding home she deserves. Her owner describes her as a loving, social, and affectionate dog who truly thrives in a calm home environment. She is very active and playful, enjoys being wherever her people are, and has a history of being gentle, clean, and closely bonded with her family. At home, she loved bath time and water, allowed brushing and nail trims, walked 1-2 times daily with mild to moderate pulling, and was comfortable spending time in her large crate. She also knows "Sit," enjoys car rides, and loves her hard bone and rope toys. It is important for future adopters to know that Xena must be the only pet in the home. She will do best without other animals, allowing her to feel secure and receive the focused support she needs.

Summary:: Xena has a bite to the other resident dog.
Summary (1):: Xena is described as social/affectionate, vocal, and very active & playful. She spends most of her time where people are, as well as in her crate, the living room, bedroom, and kitchen. For grooming, Xena loves bath time/water and allows her owner/family to trim her nails, bathe her, and brush her. Her walking skills are rated as 3 – mild to moderate pulling, and she goes on walks 1–2 times per day for about 1/2 hour. Xena is crate trained, and yes, does well, typically staying in a steel crate for large dogs for about 5 hours. During car rides, this dog loves car rides! Xena knows the cue “Sit.” Her previous owner’s favorite things about her are that she is loving, gentle, sleeps, very clean. Xena’s favorite activities, toys, food, or snacks include her hard bone and her rope.
Summary (6):: 11/23 Xena is standing at the front of her kennel, on her kuranda bed she brought to the front. She looks up at staff's hand as the loop is brought through the door with an open mouth, and the loop is dropped over her head and tightened. She is then brought out to the yard. In the yard she smells around the perimeter and all the toys on the ground. At one point, she is called over by staff and she charges across the yard and runs into staff's legs with a soft body and rubs up against them and accepts pets. Xena is easily returned to her kennel.
Summary (7):: 11/21 Xena is standing at the front of her kennel when she notices staff approaching. She begins to jump onto the kennel door. Staff attempts to leash her, but she bites the rope. They repeat, and she does the same thing. A treat is then used, and she eats it while being leashed. When outside, she walks down the ramp and turns around, pulling back towards the building when a truck passes by. Staff walk her up and down the ramp until it is time to go back inside. She is returned to her kennel, ignoring all neighboring dogs as she passes. 11/20: Xena is brought on a walk. She becomes very fearful of passing truck and her tail tuck and begins to rush back to the building. She is brought into the yard and a drag leash attached. She has a soft body and accepts pets, sitting at handler's feet on the bench. Her eyes are wide, and she is alert when she hears people passing outside the yard. She is returned without issue. 11.18 Xena is at the front of her kennel with a soft body. She is easily roped and ignores the other dogs in the room. Xena pulls moderately hard when taken on a brief walk. Xena is then brought to a yard. In the yard, Xena is put on a drag leash. Xena wanders the yard until she is called, where she then readily approaches the staff. Xena accepts treats, taking them softly, but she does not do sit or paw. Xena accepts and leans into gentle pets. Xena goes back to wandering the yard, and when called will run back to staff with a soft body. Xena is easily leashed and returned to the kennel. 11/17: Xena is at the front of her kennel and easily leashed. She rushes at the neighboring dog, growling, but is moved along out of the room. She pulls moderately towards the ramp and relieves herself. She sees cars passing and pulls back towards the building. She is brought into the yard and walked around. Handler is able to adjust her collar, removing and refitting. She pulls to the gate and stands there the remainder of the session, tail tucked, ignoring handler's coaxing to move about and refusing treats. She returns without issue. 11/13: Xena retreats to the back of her kennel and lets out a low growl. Treats are tossed and initially, she ignores them. Her door is closed, and a blocker has been put up while another staff member returns a dog. While in private, she begins eating the treats coming forward. It takes a few attempts to secure the lead, and she walks out slowly. She is brought to the yard with 2 staff members and kept on leash. She explores the yard, keeping to herself. She allows to be clipped and returned to the kennel.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful potential for defensive aggression, we recommend an adult only home. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to a bite in her previous home, Xena should be the only pet in the home & should not visit the dog park.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Bite history (dog)
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Xena finds toys, treats (bones, rawhides, etc.) of a high value. She has a tense body or hovers over them. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Xena’s mouth. Should you have to remove something from Xena, we recommend always trading for something of an equal or higher value. She should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Xena gives clear warnings when she is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Xena, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow her to initiate interactions with new people. She should never be forced to greet or to interact if she is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful Potential for Defensive Aggression. Bite history (dog): Xena has a bite to the other resident dog. The bite may have been due to resource guarding the owner, as they state she wants all of the attention. She gave warning signs prior to the bite, showed teeth, lifted lips, growled, hard barked, and/or snarled. Anxiety: Xena appears anxious at the care center, attempting to run from staff, pacing. If Xena displays anxious behavior in her future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on Generalized Anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Xena is reported to react to strangers that approach, she has been seen reacting towards other dogs through a barrier. She will need an experienced owner familiar with working with this behavior. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on On-Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
