KNOWN HISTORY:: Monay was brought in with limited information on her behavior history in a home environment. It was reported that Monay has a previous scratch incident. As the previous owner was exiting a room, Monay ran up to her and scratched her leg. This resulted in broken skin and at home self-treatment. Monay ran into another room and continued to growl. Limited information is available regarding any other incidents. The previous owner stated that this behavior has been present since they received Monay as a gift approximately six months ago.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 7/9 Monay is inside her den when staff approaches. Staff slowly closes the den portal and begins cleaning her kennel. Monay slowly starts to growl when staff moves her closed den out in order to clean. When ready, staff returns her den to the kennel. She continues growling when staff slowly reopens the den portal. They close the door and end the interaction there. 7.19 Monay is inside her den when staff approaches. Staff slowly closes the den portal and begins cleaning her kennel. Once opened she swatted at the pole. Staff ended the interaction to prevent anymore stress. 8.4 Monay is at the front of the kennel when staff member approaches. She has wide eyes, body tense and her tail begins to flick. Staff member speaks to her softly and gives her some treats, which she accepts, and the session is over. She remains tense as the staff member walks away.

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Monay has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. Scratch History: It was reported in the previous home that Monay scratched the owner while they were exiting the bedroom. Monay scratched them on the leg, that broke skin and bled. BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Monay is laying inside her den with her head near the portal. Her eyes are wide but pupils are small and rounded. She stares at the handler as they offer her slow blinks. A scratcher tool is slowly extended out to her but she remains still. The tool is used to pet on top of her head and then along her body. She tolerates the pets. As the handler pets along her chest, she starts to growl. The handler begins to pull the scratcher tool away and Monay lunges forward, biting the stick. The handler pauses and then continues to remove the tool. Monay swats at it several times, smacking it hard with nails extended. She hisses and then backs up into the den where she continues to growl. Monay is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has been swatting, hissing, growling, lunging, biting and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
