Myra May
Hello, my name is Myra May. My animal id is #239400. I am a female bronze dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 10/16/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormMyra May has been placed on the At Risk list for medical reasons. She has is emaciated and has chronic skin issues. She needs care and attention that we cannot provide.
Myra May is at risk due to behavioral reasons. During her stay in the care center Myra was initially highly fearful, obsvered to escalate to baring teeth, growling and snapping when handlers attempt to remove her from kennel. Myra was also obsvered to baulk while on leash and was not receptive to coaxing. Recently Myra has warmed up to handlers and has allowed handling. However during one instance while in the elevator Myra May jumped towards a staff member and bite and held their thigh twice. This did not break skin however it did rip their pants. It is reported that this occured without warning. Medically Myra May has dental disease, a mass, otitis externa, is underweight, and has a wound.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Myra Myra so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to defensive behaviors we recommend an adult only home.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Myra May has been obsvered to become tense and hover over a treat that is in her possession. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Myra's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Mouthiness: Myra has been obsvered to mouth handlers while seeking treats. A handler was gesturing and Myra mouthed their hand. We recommend never playing with bare hands, always with a toy, and ending play or attention whenever Myra puts teeth on skin. They should be rewarded with attention and treats when they stop and/or when they are seeking attention in alternate ways. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Fearful Defensive: Myra May has been observed to bare teeth, growl and snap towards handlers. Myra is also obsvered to baulk while on leash when a handler attempted to take her to the street. Myra is obsvered to become tense, show whale eye and lip lick when handlers initiate contact. It is important to move slowly with Myra, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Bite History (Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression.
