Animal Profile

Mimi

Hello, my name is Mimi. My animal id is #230302. I am a male tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 6/25/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person health - going into care facility.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Mimi is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when Approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A volunteer writes: We know that the shift from a family to the Care Center isn't always an easy one and it seems to be particularly heavy for Mimi. He was brought to us when his person could no longer care for him though we don't know much else about what his life was like before, Mimi has yet to feel inclined to tell us very much about who he is now. While Mimi seems to have a list of grievances a mile long and began grumbling before I could even open his condo door, we're with him through this tough spot. I'd be more than happy to listen if that's something Mimi would want, but at the moment I'm not sure he does. He hasn't been open to our offers of treats, toys, and friendship, but we know that what Mimi could use most of all is a patient family who will love him through this challenge and celebrate the brighter future he deserves.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 5. Red

KNOWN HISTORY:: Mimi was brought in without information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: Prior assessment 6/28/25: Mimi was inside the den, appearing extremely fearful with sideways ears and large pupils, and began hissing upon seeing the assessor. He was hunched and pushed to the back, and when approached with treats on the scratcher tool, he briefly sniffed them, then hissed and hard-swatted the tool. 7/3/25 Vol. Upon approach, Mimi poked her head partway out of the den, eyes wide, pupils dilated, whiskers back. She trembled a bit, unblinking and drooled a small amount. She hissed at the tool extended with the puree treat, so I left some dry treats. She continued to eye me, poking her head further out, licking her lips. I continued to talk quietly with her, then ended interaction 7/6/25 Vol. Resting in den, mostly out of sight - could just see an ear out the portal. When offered a cup of squeeze-up and Temptations on the tool, quickly reached out and swatter hard, then glared at me with airplane ears. Remained looking out and calmed down with sweet talk, but did not return slow blinks. Tried another cup after a minute or so, but it was also swatted away. Left a Feliway square. 7/9/25 Vol. Mimi was crouched inside den, with his head poking out. He hissed when approached. His eyes were wide and dilated, and his ears were slightly lowered. He swatted at treats offered on scratcher tool. He remained tense and wide-eyed when spoken to softly, and did not return slow blinks. Kept interaction short due to FAS. 7/11/25 Vol. In hidey box, peeking out for a second or two before pulling back. Eyes wide and pupils dilated. Opened door to put in treat - Mimi pulled back further - could still see side. Pushed treat bowl closer to hidey box entry - Mimi hard swatted the bowl and hissed - then pulled back. Approached with hard treats on scratcher tool - pushed bowl a little closer to box and let tool rest close by. No reaction - saw movement in box as Mimi drew in further. More sweet talk, removed tool, put in Feliway square and ended interaction. 7/22/25 Vol. He was sitting on top of his den with flat ears, hissing away. Swatted and hissed at the clicker with Churu. Hissed at cat dancer. Ended interaction to avoid FAS. 7/25/25 Vol. Sitting on top of of hidey box - privacy screen fell off, Mimi hissed, growled and jumped -  ears flat Opened cage - he hissed and crouched as if to pounce. ears completely flat and eyes round and dilated. Put in treat bowl and stood by door to sweet talk. He remained still, ears flattened. Kept talking and he rearranged paws and turned head slightly. Sweet talked a little more and ended interaction

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Mimi was crouched on top of the den, alert with wide eyes and a hard stare. His ears were erect and forward. When approached with a scratcher tool, he sat upright, hissed, and swatted at it. Unable to make contact the assessment was ended early to reduce his stress. Mimi is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
