I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/2/2024, with the surrender reason stated as animal health - will need ongoing vet care.
Leo is at risk for behavior reasons. Leo is a sweet and social dog. He has on at least 3 occasions eaten inappropriate items. The most recent resulting in an intestinal blockage requiring surgery at the care center. He will need careful management to be sure he does not ingest anything that can cause another blockage. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Leo has had multiple instances of swallowing indigestible items. He should be in a home which is able to manage this problematic behavior. He may eat children's toys or any items around the home he may find.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Anxiety,Other
Potential challenges comments:: RESOURCE GUARDING Leo has not escalated over resources, but he remains fixated on food and toy items. He is persistent, difficult to slow down, and has a hard mouth which can cause for accidental injury. If he does find something of a very high value, there is a chance he can escalate. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. BASIC MANNERS AND IMPULSE CONTROL Leo will jump up and attempt to grab items from staff. He lacks basic manners and impulse control. He can benefit from impulse control training. Please see handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. MOUTHINESS Leo can be pushy and take items with a hard mouth. Please see handout on Mouthiness and Poor Bite Inhibition. ANXIETY Leo appears anxious at the care center, whining and fixating on a familiar staff member. We have no history on his behavior in a home environment, so we do not know if this will occur outside of the care center. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on anxiety. OTHER: Ingests indigestible objects such as toys, whole fruits including the pit, he recently has had a corn on the cobb removed from his intestines. This will require long term management to prevent another foreign body.
