Animal Profile

Kuti

Hello, my name is Kuti. My animal id is #93207. I am a desexed female black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 1/12/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving.

Kuti is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have feline leukemia and am living my life to the fullest! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some feline body language together! Meet Kuti! Kuti came to the shelter after living in a home with other cats. She is a shy but gentle cat who may try to avoid contact at first, but with time and patience she can warm up and become affectionate. Kuti prefers to observe her surroundings before engaging and does best when allowed to interact on her own terms. My Ideal Home Kuti would thrive in a calm, patient home where she is given time to settle in and build trust. Adopters who understand shy or reserved cats and are comfortable letting her set the pace for interaction will help her feel safe and confident. A quiet environment with predictable routines would be ideal. Overall Health Kuti is FeLV positive and has dental disease that will require a dental procedure once placed. She is currently comfortable with pain management and is otherwise stable. Adopters should be prepared to work with a veterinarian to continue her dental care and overall wellness. Behavior Determination Experienced adopters recommended. Kuti is shy and avoidant at first but tolerates handling and care. She will do best with adopters who understand how to support a reserved cat as she adjusts to a new environment. Other Fun Facts Kuti enjoys quiet companionship, toys, and spending time near her people while maintaining her independence. She loves Friskies treats, has only lived indoors, and is comfortable using any type of litter or litter box.

Re snap for FeLV. If positive send out FeLV PCR Quant /// Positive on the FeLV snap. Blood collected to be sent to IDEXX

1/17/2026

FeLV Quant RealPCR: POSITIVE FeLV Quantity: 1.3x10^5 A: Consistent with a REGRESSIVE FELV INFECTION* Idexx Interpretation: These quantitative results are below 1.0x10^6 copies/mL and consistent with a regressive FeLV infection. Regressive FeLV infections are associated with lower levels of proviral DNA in circulating blood cells and lower amounts of FeLV p27 antigen in circulation. Cats with regressive infections are less likely to be infectious to other cats or to be sick due to an FeLV-associated disease. Cats with regressive infections may transmit FeLV by blood transfusion even if antigen negative. Cats with regressive infection may remain nonclinical or may revert to progressive infection in association with immunosuppression, stress or concurrent disease. Regressively infected cats may mount a sufficient immune response to eventually become PCR and/or antigen negative. PLAN & RECOMMENDATIONS: *P is unlikely to infect other cats or be sick due to FeLV infection *No concern placing in home, continue routine testing and preventive care as would for any other non-positive cat. *Recommend routine testing, annually as P may mount sufficient immune response to test PCR and/or antigen negative

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 01/21/26 FB61 Lying in hidey box upon approach, body and face neutral with her feet tucked and her tail curled around her body. Kuti remained neutral when spoken to and she looked around the room as I lowered her hiding box side flap to get a better view. She appears relatively calm, however when I touch her on the head she hisses hard and leans away. I leave her some treats and a catnip toy to explore later and I speak to her softly and slow-blink before ending the session. 1/28/26 FB58 Sitting in her box with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated, ears tilted, and hisses as the cage door is opened. She appears wary of interactions and I offer her some squeeze up which she does lean forward to sniff but pulls back. She shows no interest in the squeeze up and flinches but again shows interest when dry treats are dropped in her hide box. She flees to the top shelf when she has reached her limit. She is tolerant of some touches with the scratcher tool but remains tensed and hunched in the corner. 1/29/26 FB79 Such a cutie pie; inside of her hidey box, Kuti is curled up with her tail wrapped and her eyes neutral. However, when i opened the kennel door her ears tilted slightly and her eyes widen. She didnt care for any treats as she looked around the room behind me and when i brought my hand in for her to sniff it she snapped back and her ear tilted once again. She wrapped her tail tighter around her body and she watched me for any move moments. 2/02/26 FB61 In hidey box upon approach, body and face neutral with her ears forward, her feet and tail tucked and her pupils dilated. She tenses as the kennel door opens and she hisses when offered treats. She rapid breathes and I offer some more treats because she sniffs the air each time, however eventually she gets up to retreat into her cubby with a low body and tail as she hisses again softly. She walks into her main kennel space to eat the treats offered after I've closed the kennel door. I did not attempt petting today to avoid creating a negative association. 2/3/26 FB06 Sitting in her box, Kuti hisses when the door is opened, her eyes are wide and ears are forward. Offering the scratcher she curiously sniffs, jumps to the ledge when petting is attempted. She tenses up in the back corner of the ledge and her hair stands up on her back as she tolerates some petting with the scratcher. She avoids head pets as she backs away from the scratcher and falls into her box. 2/7/26 FB79 Kuti can be heard hissing when the i open the kennel door; she is inside of her box, crouched with wide very dilated eyes. She hissed when i spoke to her and when i offered teats on a tool she backed away and sits up while watching the tool for movements. When i attempted to pet her she raised her paw and was ready to swat while fixated on the tool. GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyer for more information.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Kuti was lying on her perch as the assessor approached, body and face tense with her tail wrapped tightly around her feet. Kuti made eye contact with wide eyes when spoken to and she looks around the room as the kennel door opened. Kuti tolerated petting along her head and body while tensing herself further and turning her head slowly to watch the assessor's hand pass along her back, eyes wide. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. Kuti tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
