Rambo
Hello, my name is Rambo. My animal id is #235057. I am a male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/8/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- military duty.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormRambo is at-risk due to behavior concerns. His previous owner described Rambo to be anxious and on-leash reactive. He reported him to alert bark towards both strangers and unfamiliar dogs, but can be friendly with familiar dogs. During his intake Rambo lunged towards a flock of pigeons, pulling so hard it almost caused the owner to fall. Throughout his stay he has been consistently reported to hard bark with a tense body, and lunge towards to dogs and staff. Due to his highly intense reactivity, hallways and the yard are closed down for his walks. Medically, he is apparently healthy.

Summary (6):: 9/14/25: It is reported that Rambo lunged at a handler that exited a kennel room while he was walking in the hallway. 9/13/25: Rambo has been observed to lunge and hard bark towards staff passing by his kennel. He is receptive to treats. 9/12/25: It was reported that Rambo is highly reactive in the yard. Made him staff walks 'closed yard'.
Summary (7):: 09/11/25: Rambo is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is offered treats and initially does not accept them, he shies away when the leash is presented but begins slowly accepting treats. He is leashed after multiple attempts after finally allowing the leash near him and walks out of kennel. Once outside another staff member is observed bringing a dog back to kennel, Rambo waits with handler until they pass and continues out to the street. Once outside Rambo fixates on sniffing and walks slowly down the street, when people pass Rambo will generally ignore them but occasionally he looks behind him or will stare at people until they've passed. He is able to be redirected when called and by offering treats. He walks for a bit more until brought back to the care centers for his assessment. Once complete he is clipped and returned to kennel without issue. 9/09/2025: Rambo is observed to be highly dog and pigeon reactive. While handler walks him in the driveway he abruptly and intensely lunges at a flock of pigeons. Handler uses leash pressure to pull him away. He shakes off after a couple seconds. Another dog walks into the driveway and Rambo lunges intensely again whilst hard barking with a tense body. Handler has to use to pull him away as he is unreceptive to treats and toys. 9/08/2025: Rambo was pretty aloof as the k9 behavior handlers approached. His owner easily placed our leashes on him and then removed his gear without issue. As he was walked into the care centers he remained slightly tense bodied but did not escalate. Hooks were used to remove the leashes.

Summary:: Whale eye, crouching away from handler
Date of initial:: 9/9/2025
Summary:: Tolerated muzzle and tasks. Tense body for exam
ENERGY LEVEL:: Rambo is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Rambo.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior and on leash reactivity we recommend an adult only home. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to on leash reactivity we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Rambo has been observed to become tense and move the toy away from handlers. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Rambo's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful: Rambo has been observed to have a tense body and show whale eye towards handlers. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Rambo would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Anxiety: Rambo's previous owner states that he is anxious in the home and will pace, whine and be unable to settle. If Rambo displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Rambo's previous owner states that he will hard bark and growl towards strangers. During his stay Rambo has been observed to hard bark and lunge towards dogs and pigeons. Rambo will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Pulling: Rambo's previous owner states that he pull hard while on leash. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage, and that they be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
