Animal Profile

Lucky

Hello, my name is Lucky. My animal id is #213983. I am a desexed male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 9 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/27/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- owner elderly.

Lucky is on the at-risk list for medical concerns. He is a senior dog with unregulated diabetes mellitus. He needs a quiet home with out-patient management of his condition by a local veterinarian.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Lucky is on the at-risk list for medical concerns. He is a senior dog with unregulated diabetes mellitus. He needs a quiet home with out-patient management of his condition by a local veterinarian. Lucky was surrendered to ACC due to his owner being unable to afford his on-going medical needs. His previous owner describes him as an independent couch potato - who loves spending time cuddling up and being near his people. He reportedly walks well on leash - and absolutely loves chicken flavored treats. Lucky is looking for a quiet home where he can get the medical attention he needs for his diabetes, and all the cuddles his heart desires.

My medical notes are...

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Lucky's previous owner states that he will have about three to four accidents a day. This may be due to his medical condition. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. Please see handout on House Soiling. Fearful: During intake Lucky was observed to be fearful and would baulk while on leash. During his stay on shelter Lucky has been observed to occasionally baulk while on leash. It is important to always go slow and give Lucky the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Lucky would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity: Lucky's previous owner states that he will hard and growl towards cats, dogs, and small animals while on leash. Lucky will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
