Animal Profile

Jennie

Hello, my name is Jennie. My animal id is #247814. I am a male gray cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 2/18/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- eviction.

Jennie is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is an under socialized adult cat, not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home/facility as quickly as possible to facilitate socialization in an appropriate and consistent manner. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping an under socialized and fearful adult cat adjust to new environments and strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I have lived with cats in my previous home. I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Jennie was brought in with limited information on their behavior history in a home environment. They came from a home with 40+ cats.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 2/26/26 FB58 Laying in the main area of his cage with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated. He jumps up onto the shelf as the cage door is opened and flinches backwards as I place some dry treats down. He is wary of any touch or interaction but appears to be most tolerant of touch/slow scratches on the top of his head. Touch along his cheeks makes him flinch, and any touch along his body seems to make him want to flee. I give him a box hide and leave a catnip Feliway toy for him. 2/27/26 FB79 Inside of the cubby, Jennie sits in his litterbox with a neutral face and his tail out of sight. I placed some treats in front of him which he didnt care for and when i brought the tool in his right ear tilted when i pet on his head and right side of his cheek. I ran the tool down and around his body as he turned to look at it but remained tolerant of all pets. I spent some time talking to him and when i closed the cubby door he slow blinked a few times through the glass. 3/4/26 FB06 Jennie is laying inside his box acing the back of the kennel. I speak softly to him and he slowly lifts his head and turns towards me very slowly. Once he see’s me he flinches and his eyes are wide. I offer him the scratcher and he has no interest. He tolerates some head pets with the scratcher as he remains frozen in his box. 3/6/26 FB79 Hiding inside of his hidey box, Jennies ears are forward and i can see him trying to peak his eyes a little over to see me; when i speak after a few moments he slow blinks and when i used to tool for pets he lowered his head leaning it to the side for more cheek rubs. However, when i reached in to drop some treats inside for him he flinched harshly and his eyes get wide. After that he remained still and frozen. 3/10/26 FB58 Laying at the front of her cage as the assessor approached, body tense with eyes wide. He moves to his box and tolerates some head pets while flinching. When pet on the back he jumps to his shelf and flattens his ears. 3/13/26 FB79 At the front of the kennel, Jennie quickly jumps into her hidey box when i open the door and peaks her big wide eyes to watch me as i speak. Her ears were forward but her right one tilted as i brought the tool in to pet on her head. After a few moments i brought my hand in and gave her cheek rubs while her ear remained tilt but no further reaction. I also ran my hand down her back and body and she slow blinked after i kept speaking softly and slow blinking at her. 3/16/26 FB61 Lying in cat box, body facing away from the assessor with head lowered onto floor. He tolerates petting along his head and body while remaining completely still, tilting his ears and wriggling the skin along his lower back. I leave him a catnip toy, speak to him softly and end the session. When I check on him later I see he his sniffing his toy curiously with his ears forward.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization

Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyer. Jennie came from a home with about 40 other cats, it is likely that he was not appropriately socialized to humans from an early age. He is very apprehensive of people and while showing no aggressive behaviors, he does attempt to avoid human contact. It is difficult to predict if he will respond to socialization but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Upon approach, Jennie was laying in a perched position as the back of the ledge with a neutral face and eyes, forward ears and his tail wrapped tightly around his body. As the kennel door opened and slowly offered the scratcher, he showed no interest. He tolerated some head pets with the scratcher but squirmed slightly when pet along his back. No pick up was attempted at this time. Jennie tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. ?He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to ?his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
