Remy
Hello, my name is Remy. My animal id is #201236. I am a female brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 years 6 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/17/2024.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormRemy is at risk due to behavior concerns. Remy was reported to have bitten twice previously. Both incidents being bite-and-releases one to a person and one to another dog. In the Care Center, Remy is highly reactive towards other dogs and is difficult to redirect when walking past them. Due to the stress of the shelter environment, she has started chewing a hole in her kennel wall. When not around dogs, Remy displays a neutral posture and enjoys cheese. Medically, Remy is healthy.

She also bit another dog when approached off-leash. In the Care Center, Remy is reactive towards other dogs, but once in an area where she is not exposed to them, she is calm and social.

Summary (6):: 12/21/24: It as reported that Remy chewed a hole into her kennel wall. 12/20/24: Remy is standing at the front of her kennel as handlers approach. She barks and whines as handler begins unlocking the kennel doors and while attempting to leash begins pushing her head out the kennel door very hard while vocalizing with an open mouth. She directs this mainly to her left where there are two neighboring dogs very intensely barking at her and handlers. Due to Remy being difficult to redirect from the other dogs, handlers decide to reset and close the kennel door. Second handler uses spray cheese to distract the reactive dogs while main handler attempts to leash Remy. Due to the dogs focusing on the spray cheese she is much easier to leash and is sucesfully placed on a double leash. She is then taken out and attempts to intensely cage fight with other dogs while exiting and head whips toward the back leash at one point. She attempts to plant her feet on the wall and spring off of it to give her more momentum to reach the cages but she is kept away by handlers. Once she exits the room she calms down and begins walking more loosely with handlers. She is brought out to the yard and sniffs around before using the bathroom. When dogs pass in the play yard she will fixate on them and sometimes begin hard barking at them, she remains difficult to redirect. She stays in the yard a while more before being brought back inside, clipped and returned to kennel. She continues to attempt to cage fight when returning but is brought back successfully.
Summary (7):: 12/18/24: Remy is laying at the front of the kennel with neutral body. As handler unlocks the kennel a neighboring dog begins to bark. Remy jumps up placing her paws on the kennel door whining attempting to push out of the crack in the door. Handler offers treats but she is not intersted. Once leash is secured, she is removed from kennel on a short leash due to her reaction to the other dogs. Remy immediately pulls towards the other dogs barking and growling. Handler pulls her away and Remy stands on her back legs and spins. Handler attempts to place her back into kennel but she snaps towards the leash. Handler then navigates her down the aisle to the hall. She attempts to go towards all the kennels while barking. She is brought to the behavior room where she loosens but still does not take treats or engage with handlers. A second handler accompanies them on a street walk. Remy is aloof walking slightly ahead of handler. When another dog walks towards her, she is tense then begins to vocalize barking and growling. She stands on her back legs flailing back and forth to get to the other dog. Treats are tossed but it does not redirect her. She does not stop until the dog is out of sight and she is walked the other way. In the behavior room, she allows collaring and softens as time passes, wagging her tail and taking treats. She is brought back to kennel on a double leash. When waiting in the hallway, she barks and flails back and forth as the other dogs bark at her. She is muscled into kennel and allows the leashed to be removed with the hook. 12/18/24: Remy was observed to be hard panting in kennel.
Date of intake:: 12/17/2024

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Remy so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity we recommend a home with no children. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to Remy's history of lunging at dogs and biting one, Remy should be the only dog in the home and should not visit a dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal,Bite history (human),Bite history (dog)
Potential challenges comments:: Low threshold for arousal: Remy became excited and bit someone in the home on the neck, that left bruising when they were fighting with another person. Please see the handout on Low threshold for arousal. Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression/Bite history (human)/Bite history (dog): Remy bit an off leash dog when it approached her and bit someone in the home during an altercation. Please see the handout on Bite history. Anxiety: Remy is reported to be anxious when left alone. She should get daily enrichment to help with this. Please see the handout on General Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: During intake Remy was observed to push off of the wall while kennel fighting with a the neighboring dogs. During her stay in the care center Remy have been observed to be highly dog reactive. Vocalizing and lunging towards other dogs while on leash. This behavior is not able to be redirected easily using treats or squeakie sounds. Remy will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
