Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

Date of intake:: 1/22/2025

Spay/Neuter status:: No

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray, no known history

Behavior toward dogs:: Came in with one other dogs but unknown how they are together

Date of assessment:: 1/27/2025

Summary:: When brought into the assessment room Mr Bear remained tense and fearful. Noted to be tense, trembling and maintaining distance from the handler. When approached, Mr Bear began seeking exit and jumping up on the door. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety displayed. Mr Bear is not a candidate to receive a handling assessment at this time.

Summary:: 1/30/25: Mr. Bear greets another dog at the gate with a tense body. He stretches his nose forward to sniff.

Summary (7):: 2/8/25: Mr. Bear is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches . He then starts to bark at the door as the handler was unlocking it. He stepped to the back of is kennel to avoid being leashed. The handler was able to lasso him and take him down stairs for a walk. On the walk, he was nervous of everything around him and would try to stop waking and try walking behind the handler. He would also pull hard across the street and then instantly stop walking again once back on the sidewalk. He pulled on the way back to kennel and entered very quickly due to being nervous of the dogs in kennel barking at him as they were passed by. 2/5/25: Mr. Bear is observed to begin hard barking when seeing a handler while in their pop up crate. This behavior continues even after the handler has left the room. 1/31/25: Mr. Bear is lying down in his bed as handler approaches his kennel. He then approaches the front and barks repeatedly. He was able to be leashed and he pulled on the way to the play yard for playgroup. He had a very tense body frame, his hackles were up and he had a very stiff tail while greeting the other dog at the gate. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. He was able to be taken back to kennel with no issues. He barked at the door as the handler was locking it and walked away. 1/27/25: Mr. Bear was barking and jumping in kennel as handler approached. He would bark and walk to the back of his kennel when the handler would show their lead. Once leashed, he pulled on the way to the behavior room due to being nervous of all the dogs barking. In the room, he was nervous of being collared and kept approaching the door to go out. He jumped up on the trash can and would shake a lot. Due to being nervous, his assessment will be completed on a later date. 1/25/25: Mr Bear will hard barks and run to the front when handlers approach. He will stop to sniff treats but continues to bark while handler is present. 1/22/25: Mr Bear was shut down during intake. He would refuse to walk, pancaking in the hallway. He could not be coaxed with treats or toys. He allows handler to lift him and place him into a top kennel. Later on, staff report that he is growling from the back of the kennel when leashing is attempted. He'll come forward with a slow approach and eventually allows handler to lift him. He is returned to a bottom kennel.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Mr Bear so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior and seeking exit we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Mr Bear has been observed to be highly fearful during his stay in the care center. Noted to have a tense and trembling body. In kennel Mr Bear has been observed to hard bark and growl towards handlers. It is important to move slowly with Mr Bear, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
