Animal Profile

Jules

Hello, my name is Jules. My animal id is #196903. I am a desexed male gray tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 4/1/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving.

Jules is on the emergency placement list due to his behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A volunteer writes:Jules reminds me of my favorite "Sesame Street"'s character:Oscar the Grouch! This seven year old gent came with 5 of his friends to the Manhattan Care Center because of housing issues. Nothing is known about his past life. Jules is the real Mc Coy! The big guy does not want to put on a happy face while he is locked up in a kennel and severed from all that and who he knew. Really, should he purr and lean and head bunt? No, no way! His little toe, though, keeps telling him, day after day:look, Tiera, Sheldon and Sammy have been rescued and Ebony was adopted...Is it smart to keep doing what you are doing, distancing yourself from the very people who want to help you...Think hard, Jules...Aaaah, you are probably right!I have to focus on what I dream of, leave this kennel, have again a home of my own and someone who will put up with a loving grumpy and charmingly opinionated middle aged kitty. Jules is making slow progresses with the help of staff and volunteers who believe in him, use treats(Jules loves to eat), clicker training and play to get him out of his thick armour. We are hoping that you too can have faith in Jules and give him a chance! Please check here for updated adoption hours.

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

KNOWN HISTORY:: Jules was brought in without information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/5/24 In back of top cubby - resting paws out, eyes wide, ears slightly sideways. Allowed head scratchers with tool - no movement at all - eyes stay wide, ears don't move. Keep scratching - no movement when stopped. Tried cheek scratches, Jules turned his head away but allowed head scratches. Removed tool for a few moments - no movement. When approached again, allowed head scratches and head dropped slightly, eyes a little less wide. Gave more scratches and ended interaction. 4/6/24 Jules was sitting upright in the back of the cubby, tensing slightly when door was opened, and remaining immobile while pet with tool. He ignored the treat but allowed brief pets by hand on his head and back. When he began to swish his tail, I ended interaction. May warm up soon. 4/7/24 Squished against back of top cubby, eyes wide and dilated. Leaned forward to sniff chicken and squeeze-up on the tool, but then pulled back and lip-licked. Dropped treats and left him alone for a few minutes, but still hadn't eaten any when I checked back. 4/9/24 Sitting in back of cubby with wide dilated eyes and forward ears. Sniffed at Squeeze-up but didn’t eat. Didn’t react to laser toy. Hissed and swatted at scratcher tool. Fearful. 4/11/24 Jules was hiding in her cubby. She was uninterested in squeeze ups and displayed lip licking. With a slow approach, I tried to softly talk and pet but was met with flat ears and hissing. 4/13/24 Jules was sitting upright at back of cubby. When I opened the door to talk and extend a treat, he hissed and charged at cubby door. Ended interaction. 4.15.24 Opened kennel door to provide cat bed. Jules came out of cubby hissing at staff. Staff soft-talked and slowly gave cat bed. Staff showed Temptations first, then gave the to Jules on shelf by cubby portal. He licked-lip, but stopped hissing and his face stopped being tense. 4/16/24 Hissed when I opened kennel door. Added chicken filet to his food which he ate up. Wasn’t interested in Squeeze-ups or Temptations. Hissed every time I went near him. Very fearful still. 4/17/24 Jules was crouched in cubby with his tail tucked around his body, and wide dilated eyes. He hissed when approached, but returned slow blinks after a few moments. He crept out into main kennel to eat treats, holding his body low to the ground. He raised a paw to swat when I held my hand up to the kennel bars, but accepted more treats from scratcher tool and returned slow blinks again afterward. 4/20/24 Jules was sitting up at the back of cubby, and hissed through the glass partition and pounced against it. I opened the main condo door to extend the treat towards the portal, which he licked, then retreated back to cubby. He walked to the front ledge to get dry treats, eyeing me, then retreating quickly to cubby, poking his head out to observe me cleaning up kennel (2 large gooey furballs). Jules remains wary and shows distancing behavior. I put up a privacy shield. *Notes continued in GAN*

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Independent,Curious,Timid,Skittish

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children

Recommendations comments:: No young under 5yrs

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Jules was tightly crouched against the back wall of the cubby. Alert with eyes widen anxiously looking around. Ears erect and forward. He walks off onto the ledge after allowing head and body strokes with the scratcher tool. Remains wary with his surroundings watching from afar. Ignores offered treats. Jules tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
