Sunny
Hello, my name is Sunny. My animal id is #245976. I am a desexed male white cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 1/20/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- eviction.
Sunny is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is an under socialized adult cat and bonded to his sibling Stripes (245977). He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping an under socialized adult cat adjust to new environments, particularly cats that may be "spirit cats".

My foster writes: Sunny (white) and Stripes (striped gray) are adorable siblings who are shy, quiet but exploratory. Stripes is very bold by trying new places to sit under and observe all day. Sunny is a little shier and follows Stripes, but also prefers to sit under all day. Given some time, they will be ready to interact with you and come out on their own! = Sunny and Stripes (245977) are a sweet bonded pair who are slowly but surely learning what it means to be in a safe and loving home. During the day, they cuddle together in privacy. At night, they love to explore and play. While they are still only observing humans from afar, they do so with a soft, gentle curiosity that suggests it is only a matter of time before they fully embrace their new lives as spoiled, beloved pets. · My history is a mystery and we're still learning about my personality. I've been very nervous in the Care Center and I may be the same way in a home environment. Hopefully I can have time to relax and get more comfortable around people, but there's also a chance I may just prefer my independence. That's okay too! · Over time, I may get used to one or two people who will be allowed to touch me. I may choose to hang out near you, or sleep on the bed with you at night. · I would be a great choice for people with a quiet household, who want to make a difference for an individual cat. I will require patience and understanding. · I will not be a good choice for busy homes, including those with children. · I may be a fine choice for situations where you don't have a lot of time to devote to a pet - most kitties like me do not need or want much attention from people.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 1/24/26 FB58 Sitting with a tense face and body, at the back of the shelf, eyes wide and dilated as he appears wary of interactions. He is somewhat tolerant of pets/touch with the tool but remains tense and frozen as he turns to look into the corner. 1/28/26 FB06 Sunny was tucked away, out of view, in the den with his sibling. As I lifted the den cover he was at the back of the den with a neutral face and eyes, ears are forward. His sibling pressed herself up against him and I was unable to do an interaction. 2/03/26 FB61 Hunched in cat den, huddled in front of his kennel-mate with a tense body, flat ears and dilated pupils. He hisses continuously and positions himself in front of his sister. They are very close and he is very protective of her. I do not push any petting today, I leave some treats for them to explore later when they feel more comfortable and I slow-blink and speak to them softly before lowering the cage cover. Likely bonded. 3/29/26 FB06 Sunny starts to low growl as I enter the kennel. I slowly lift the den cover where Stripes darts behind Sunny to hide. Sunny continues to low growl and hiss. 3/30/26 FB79 Sunny is pressed at the back of the den with wide eyes and his ears forward; however when i speak and attempt to slowly bring the tool in for contact he hissed followed by low growling and grumbling. His ears tilted as he hunched his shoulders inward. 4/2/26 FB58 In den and hidden from view, when the cage door is opened low growling can be heard and Sunny's paw reaches out to swat as I close the den portal to place two enrichment cups near the opening as well as a catnip pillow with some feliway sprayed on it. When the portal is opened again, Sunny pokes his head out (Stripes remains completely hidden) and sniffs at the cups with eyes wide and dilated, slow blinking once before he ducks back in. When I check back, the enrichment cups have been completely eaten and are somehow all the way at the front of the cage. I lift the den cover in order to be able to see Stripes as well, and she is pressed against the back. Sunny lunges at the front again but then pokes his head out to sniff at the high value treats that I placed next to the den. He seems more curious and although he is consistently low growling, he watches the room and slow blinks back at me at times before he comes out of the den fully and sits next to it tensely for some time. 4/06/26 FB61 In cat den upon approach, standing in front of his bonded friend. He hisses repeatedly until I walk away from his kennel. Neither cat attempts to leave the den or engage with the enrichment offered while I’m in the room.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Bonded pair,Other,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization
Potential challenges comments:: At the time of his re-assessment (upon returning to the shelter from his time in foster with his bonded sibling), Sunny is in his den standing over Stripes with a very tense and frozen body, eyes wide and dilated and appears to be hovering over her as she lays plastered against the back wall of the den and tense with eyes wide. When the assessor introduces the scratcher tool and slowly moves it towards Stripes in an attempt to make contact with her, he quickly swats hard and knocks the tool down and away from Stripes as if to prevent the tool from making contact. While he is also later not particularly comfortable with touch, after swatting the tool, he shifts to stand over and hover even closer to Stripes. Bonded pair cats can often demonstrate protective behavior by watching over each other to provide emotional, physical, and safety security. They may display this by grooming one another, sleeping together, and, in some cases, intervening when their partner is stressed, scared, or being handled by humans. This can be displayed in defensive behaviors when one cat may interfere, hiss, or act aggressively if they feel their partner is threatened or roughly handled, even by their owner. In this case, exacerbated by being closed in such a small space, Sunny may have escalated to such intense defensive aggression when the assessor attempted to make contact with stripes initially due to a desire to intervene and protect her from potential harm or FAS. While this behavior seemed to have been related to interacting with Stripes, given that this is a bonded pair and they much stay together - Sunny's immediate and significant reactivity poses an increased risk to handling these cats. 4/2/26 After further consideration, the Feline Behavior Team has decided to change Sunny's behavior level to a Level 4* as he previously was more timid in his foster homes and did not present with such bold behaviors. There is a high chance as stated above that the shelter environment, being enclosed in a den, and not having a means for escape has resulted in a shelter specific escalation in behavior that is not typical of Sunny's usual demeanor.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 4
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Sunny would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 1/22/26 Inside of the den, Sunny is hunched over with an arched back and her tail tight around her legs. He immediately turn his back to the assessor when the den cover was lifted and presses his head into the corner. The assessor pets down and around his back and body and he slowly turns his head with tide dilated eyes to look at the assessor. Sunny was spoken to softly but he remained very still/frozen with no further reaction. He allows the assessor to pet on his head and cheeks while not moving. Pick up was not attempted at this time. 3/26/26 Upon meeting with Sunny is in his den with his bonded sibling Stripes (245977) and hidden from view. When the den cover is lifted. He is standing up at the back with his back facing the front and hunched over his sibling, turning to stare at the assessor with eyes wide and ears tilted. When the den door is lifted slightly and the scratcher tool is introduced slowly, hisses and tenses even more. As the assessor attempts to pet/make contact with Stripes, he begins to low growl and swats at the scratcher tool with force, knocking it out of the assessor's hand. Afterwards, the assessor is able to make contact with an pet/touch both Stripes and Sunny as he remains tense and wary, eyes wide and dilated. When the scratcher tool is removed and touch is attempted again, he repeats this behavior and swats with force when the assessor attempts to make contact with him. Pick up is not attempted. There is a high chance that Sunny may be more of a "Spirit Cat" than a cat that is capable of and willing to be social with people. 4/2/26 Please see potential challenges for explanation for updated behavior level. Sunny is not open to interaction at this time and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. Because his previous fosters report he is independent, shy, and avoidant of interactions in a home environment, we believe the behavior seen in the care center is shelter-specific and this cat would make a great independent pet, but is really struggling in the shelter environment. This cat is suitable for adopters with previous cat experience, experience with under socialized cats, and those who are willing to work with a cat who needs time and patience to help him adjust to their new home.
