India is at risk for medical reasons. India is a geriatric lady with a number of underlying issues, most concerning of which is hematuria. We have been unable to determine the cause, at the care center, with any degree of certainty, and this will require further medical investigation as a matter of priority. We have not conducted a formal assessment of India's behavior, but she has been agreeable and easy to handle whilst at the care center.

My medical notes are...

Weight: 34.4 lbs

[Spay/Neuter Waiver - Age] It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 1. Green

Upon intake, India was very friendly and sought attention from staff. She postured to urinate multiple times. Some blood dripped out. When she did urinate, there was both urine and a tinge of blood. While sitting in the clients' laps (stretched across both of them), she began urinating and it seemed that India was not aware that she was doing it. She groaned slightly while posturing on one occasion.

Date of Intake: 2/23/2018

Basic Information:: Client came in with his girlfriend to request euthanasia for India. India is a 10 year old not spayed medium/large mixed breed dog. Client has had her since she was 2 months old. The client took her to the vet last summer 2017 after she was urinating blood, as well as posturing to urinate without anything coming out. After counseling, the client decided that he would surrender her instead of requesting euthanasia since it seems to be a treatable issue.

Previously lived with:: Adults and children, one dog at one point

How is this dog around strangers?: Dog is friendly with strangers.

How is this dog around children?: Dog is very friendly and more gentle with children. India is very tolerant of children, even when they pull her ears or play too roughly. She will give a warning bark when she has reached her limit.

How is this dog around other dogs?: Dog is friendly with other dogs. If another dog barks or growls, India will likely mimic, but she has never bitten another animal.

How is this dog around cats?: India does not like cats and will chase them down.

Resource guarding:: India has no known history of resource guarding.

Bite history:: India has no known history of bites.

Housetrained:: Yes

Energy level/descriptors:: High energy

Has this dog ever had any medical issues?: Yes

Medical Notes: India went to a vet in summer 2017 when she started urinating blood and posturing to urinate without being able to produce urine. She was given antibiotics, which started to clear up the problem, but the same symptoms soon returned. Within the last week or so, symptoms have gotten worse. She has urinated while laying down before and India seemed to not be aware that it was happening. This happened while she was in admissions, as well. She urinated several times (both successfully and not) and there was a tinge of blood. A couple of times while posturing, just blood came out.

For a New Family to Know: India is a very friendly dog who loves her people and her family. She grew up with the client's younger sister since the sister was born. She was good with her while she was an infant and remained very close as the sister grew older. India enjoys playing with sticks, but not toys (she will rip the squeaker out). India can be nervous during loud storms or fireworks. India is fully housebroken and well behaved while left alone. She tends to lay on her bed and just relax while she is left alone. More recently, India has tipped over garbage if there is food inside. Her general appetite has decreased, but prior to illness, she ate wet and dry food from Pedigree. India is well behaved for a bath, though she does not like it.

Summary (1):: According to India's previous owner, India is social around other dogs, but will growl if they growl at her. 2/24: When off leash at the Care Centers, India engaged in bouts of play with the novel male dog, when she was not struggling to urinate. 2/25: India continues to engage in bouts of play in a group of male and female dogs.
