Mickey
Hello, my name is Mickey. My animal id is #237833. I am a desexed male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 9/27/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- hoarding situation.
Mickey is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is an under socialized adult cat and is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with under socialized cats and helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats in my previous home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. A volunteer writes: Mickey, Mickey, he's so fine.

Behavior Condition: 4. Orange
KNOWN HISTORY:: Mickey was brought in from a hoarding situation with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/9/25 FB79 Mickey is inside of his litter with his tail tightly wrapped and his eyes wide when i open the cubby door. He has no reaction when i speak or when i toss in treats. Mickey didn't lean in to sniff the tool but tolerated all pets on his head and cheeks as well as down his back as he remained still/frozen. 10/13/25 Vol. Mickey was in his bed/box. The walls of the box are high, so it was hard to see him. He looked up at me as I opened the kennel door. I touched him with a pipe cleaner toy to check his reaction. He remained lying down, looking upwards. He accepted all petting with the pipe cleaner and my hand. He didn’t show any reaction. I offered him Squeeze Up and tried to get him interested in the food trays left for him by Medical (including slices of hot dog!) but he did not take them. He remained calm, just observing his surroundings. 10/17/25 FB61 Hunched in back of kennel, body and face tense with his feet and tail tucked. He remains completely focused on me as he tolerates petting along his head and body and he flinches and slow-blinks when offered treats and a catnip toy. Nervous boy - he is from a hoarding case and once he's better we will reunite him with one of his brothers. We have had great success pairing up hoarding cats, these guys are usually more socialized with other cats and will seek/find comfort through each other. 10/20/25 FB06 Upon approach, Mickey was lying on top of the ledge with wide eyes and a tense body. As I approached him with the scratcher and pet him, his body and face tense up even more as he stood up to pull himself as far away as possible. I stopped the interaction and slid some treats in a tray towards him and he flinched. 10/22/25 FB61 Displayed similar behaviors as previous interactions. 11/3/25 FB06 Upon approach, Mickey was laying in his cubby with ears forward, neutral eyes and a slightly tense face. As I opened the door, Mickey remained still. I offered him the scratcher but he did not sniff it. As I pet his head with the tool, his face tensed up more but he tolerated the petting. As I moved the tool down along his back his body tensed and his back started flinching. I ended the interaction as to not stress him out. 11/08/25 FB06 Micky was lying in his den when I opened the door. He looked depressed as I peeked through the glass of the den at him. No interest in the scratcher. Showed no emotion when I gave him head scratches. I left him with some crunchy treats, hope it brightens his day a little. 11/12/25/ FB61 In cat den upon approach, body and face tense with his tail curled around his body. He remains completely frozen and focused on me when I lift hid den cover and offer him some squeeze-ups and a catnip toy. I speak to him softly and slow-blink before ending the session. 11/16/25 FB79 Today, Micky was inside of his den and displayed the same behaviors as the previous enrichment note. He was still/frozen with wide eyes as he watched me with no reaction
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Adult cat socialization
Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyers for more information. Mickey came from a home with about 40 other cats, it is likely that he was not appropriately socialized to humans.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Other,Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Mickey may warm up to his new environment quicker if there is already a resident cat. Mickey comes from a hoarding home and is likely socialized and familiar with other cats as opposed to humans.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Mickey was hunched in the back of his kennel as the assessor approached, body and face tense with his feet tucked and his tail wrapped tightly around him. Buddy made eye contact with wide eyes when spoken to and he tensed further as the kennel door opened. Mickey tolerated petting along his head and body while wrapping his tail around himself even tighter and beginning to tremble. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. Mickey is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He is very apprehensive of people and while showing no aggressive behaviors, he does attempt to flee and avoid human contact. It is difficult to predict if he will respond to socialization but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
