Babalone is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

My name is Babalone and I am the most handsome boy around! I have a beautiful tabby pattern and nice round cheeks. I am very scared in the shelter and am currently displaying spirit cat behaviors. I am the purrfect low-key companion for humans who like to be out of the house! I will thrive in a low-traffic home with adults only. Come to Brooklyn's care center to meet me today! What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I am finding the shelter a bit overwhelming. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Babalone was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/10/22 Laying in his litter box with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated, and frozen with ears slightly to the side. He tolerates touch but remains frozen while lip licking. 12/11/22 Lying in back of kennel, body and face tense. His pupils are dilated and his feet and tail are tucked. I open the kennel door to attempt petting, but once I open the door he turns his head quickly and tenses as if about to flee. I close the door to prevent this from happening and I offer some treats through the kennel door. He remains frozen and wary. 12/13/22 Hunched in back of kennel, body and face tense and tail wrapped tightly around feet. He avoids eye contact with dilated pupils and retreats back and forth through his portal door when I try offering treats. I do not push petting today to avoid creating a negative association and I leave him some feliway scented paper before ending our session. Needs time. 12/20/22 Lying in back of kennel, body and face tense with his ears flat and his body low. He makes eye contact when spoken to, then hisses and retreats when offered treats. I speak to him softly and slow-blink before ending the session. Needs time, high level of FAS. Not comfortable with interaction at this time. 12/27/22 Lying on top of kuranda bed, bod tense and head lowered onto floor. He sniffs the treat that’s gently tossed towards him and I’m able to get a couple of clicks in to begin to create an association between me and the treat. He becomes overwhelmed by the room and the interaction quickly and stops engaging with the treats eventually. I spray feliway and end the session. 12/29/22 Babalone has been showing consistent behaviors in our care center and have not shown improvement with daily interactions or enrichment offered. For this reason, the feline behavior team is going to discontinue recording daily behavior notes in Shelter Buddy. He is still going to receive daily enrichment and we will continue to monitor their behavior. Notes will resume if we notice any changes in behavior.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Timid,Independent,Skittish
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Babalone was hunched in front of his kennel as the assessor lifted his cage cover, body and face tense, eyes wide and tail wrapped tightly around body. Babalone made eye contact when spoken to, pupils dilated, then he quickly retreated to the other side of the kennel as the cage door opened. Babalone tolerated touch with the assessor’s hand while hissing and rushing through his portal with a low body and tail to avoid further contact. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. Upon re-assessment, Babalone has progressed to tolerating petting without hissing or fleeing. He remains hesitant and uncomfortable with petting but is more tolerant. On approach, Babalone is sitting on his kuranda bed with a tense face and body, low posture, eyes wide and dilated and tail wrapped loosely around his body. He tolerates petting with the scratcher tool through the cage door but will turn to watch and smell the tool as he is pet. As the tool is removed from the cage, he reaches out to swat a few times but does not escalate past this. When the door is opened, he begins to low growl with airplane ears but remains tolerant of petting with the scratcher tool and allows petting along his cheeks. He low growls throughout the petting. Pick up was not attempted at this time. Babalone tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
