Loreo

Hello, my name is Loreo. My animal id is #159533. I am a desexed female black cat at the . The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 9 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/10/2022, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving - no pets allowed.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Loreo is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. Although she is beginning to acclimate to the shelter environment, due to a repeat bite history and the potential to deteriorate in the shelter it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Loreo is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association and continues to show behavior consistent with petting induced aggression. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with working with these types of behavior.

A volunteer writes: Loreo previously lived with three adults. She was described by them as having a high energy level. She enjoyed jumping into bags and hunting for treats hidden in a blanket. In the shelter, she has shown some petting-induced aggression, after a trial adoption, so she is only available through a New Hope Partner. Please see the instructions above in order to meet this tuxedoed gal./ A volunteer writes: The Care Center has been a bit much for our Loreo and consequently she's a little unsure about how to best approach new friends. Should she offer a friendly meow? A cheerful chirp? Put her paws up on the condo door? Offer to show them a pipe cleaner toy? Loreo's not entirely sure, so she often does a combination of these things as a greeting. What Loreo does know for certain is that she loves her playtime. This is when she really shines! Loreo plays enthusiastically and puts her whole heart into it. It's one of her talents and she loves to show visitors her skills! Loreo is a wonderfully dynamic kitty who will thrive with a family that understands the value and importance of play.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/15/22 Sleeping by the back but becomes alert and looks at me with dilated eyes, lip licking. She looks around the room and seems a little unsure, but remains calm and sniffs the scratcher tool when extended. Sniffs treats and squeeze ups, eating it when offered, and then head-butts gently when pet on the head. She will retreat and tense up when people walk into the room but doesn't hiss, growl, or display any other concerning behaviors. 12/28/22 Hiding in cat den initially, body and face hidden from view. She steps out vocalizing as I offer treats, then she allows all petting with the scratcher tool while standing in front of her kennel. She leans in, raises her tail and turns her head all around to continue to rub her cheeks on the scratcher. She does appear to have the potential to become overstimulated as she remains active, watches all kinds of movements and waves her tail back and forth. Will continue to monitor a little longer before deciding if she can become a level 2. 12/31/22 She s sitting on top of her den with a curious face and relaxed body, her ears are forward and she comes down to greet me as I open her cage door. She head bunts my hand when I offer it to her and allows me to pet her along her back as well with her tail high. She looks back to watch my hand once but otherwise shows no concerning behaviors regarding petting. She remains loose and vocalizing throughout. I test to see if she will let me pick her up and as I touch her belly he vocalizes but does not past this and I am able to move away without issue. After she looks at me and hisses softly once. Not ready for pick up yet but is becoming more comfortable engaging with us. 2/5/23 Lying on kuranda bed, face slightly alert and feet stretched away from her body. She watches me as I open the kennel door and although she sniffs the treats offered she remains focused on me and does not commit to eating them. I attempt petting with the scratcher tool and she tolerates touch briefly before whipping her head and stress meowing loudly. She appears to have been quite disturbed by the petting attempt.. will continue to monitor. 2/7/23 Sitting in front of kennel, ears forward and face neutral. She makes eye contact when spoken to and when I I begin to open the kennel door she vocalizes loudly, flattens her ears and swats at my hand. Her reaction is loud and her body language is fearful but she swats without claws. I do not push further hands-on interaction at this time and I speak to her softly and slow-blink through the cage door before leaving her some squeeze-ups, which she eats immediately. She needs time to adjust. GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Energetic

VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty

CHARACTER TYPE: : Playful,Bold,Curious,Independent,People oriented,Social

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Uncomfortable with pick up,Pet-induced aggression,Rough play,Very high energy level,New home adjustment period,Fearful,Other

Potential challenges comments:: Noted to often bite, scratch and pounce on people - triggers for these behaviors were unknown. Loreo was noted to hide under furniture and pounce out at the adopter and her family. She would sit next to the adopter and randomly attack their arms, hands and legs. Loreo was also noted to chase around the adopter if they tried to move out of the way from the attack. The original owner has stated that they did not play with them often and this hiding and pouncing behavior may be due to a lack of play or sufficient stimulation. While Loreo at one point tolerated being lifted briefly, based off of her previous owner notes that state she would struggle when picked up and held, the behavior team is marking her as uncomfortable with pick up.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Loreo is laying at the front of the cage, tense with their ears to the side and eyes wide. They lean forward to sniff the scratcher tool and seem to almost bunt their head into the scratcher tool. When the tool is run along their back they turn their head quickly to look at the tool and emit a quiet hiss. When touched again, they turn quickly and again hiss quietly before doing an aborted short lunge at the tool and hitting their nose into the tool (similar to a muzzle punch with dogs). When the tool is left near them, they hiss again and lunge at the tool possibly attempting to bite but don't commit, almost seeming to try and fake the assessor out, then swatting at the tool. The assessor introduces the assess-a-hand to test whether or not they will bit and they behave the same way; hissing, lunging and biting but again not actually biting. Most of these behaviors appear to be intended as distance increasing behaviors. None of the movements have much power behind them aside from the swats and we can't be sure whether they intended to actually bite the tool or assess-a-hand. Although timid initially, Loreo is now beginning to acclimate to the shelter environment. Loreo was sitting upright in root of her kennel as the assessor approached, ears forward and tail curled neatly around feet. Loreo vocalized softly, then stood up as the kennel door opened. Oreo allowed three pets along her head and back while leaning in before becoming overwhelmed, tilting her ears and hissing at the assessor. Loreo is now very social and appreciative of attention and pets. Upon re-assessment, she is sitting on top of her den but meows and comes down to the front when she sees the assessor approach. She sits at the front with her ears forward, tail high and vocalizes while the assessor unlocks the door. She accepts and appreciates all petting as she leans into the assessor's hand with her tail high and body neutral. She is tolerant of a brief pick up and comes back to the front of the cage for more petting once she is placed back down. Upon returning to the shelter after her trial adoption, Loreo has show more anti-social behavior and is does not allow petting or handling. During her re-assessment, Loreo is laying on her kuranda bed with a neutral body and alert face. She lifts her head when the cage door is opened and vocalizes once as the Assess-A-Hand is moved towards her slowly. She shows signs of pet induced aggression as she vocalizes and immediately turns to bite at the hand after brief touch and pins it down as she bites and growls. This behavior is consistent and pick up is not attempted. Loreo is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to bite and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
