Animal Profile

Blackberry

Hello, my name is Blackberry. My animal id is #233910. I am a desexed male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 4 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 8/9/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- death of owner.

Blackberry is at risk due to medical reasons. He is a mildly overweight adult male cat that had one episode of urethral obstruction. He was successfully unblocked on 1/2 and now his kidney values have normalized. However, he is still not eating and requires continued supportive veterinary care to help him recover. Behaviorally, he is timid but allows all handling. Previously, Blackberry was in foster and reported to be shy but social with a slow approach.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

My foster writes: Blackberry is a sweet batman looking cat that is looking for someone to give him some time and space to come out of his shell. He definitely is a shy boy, that has better social skills with other cats than with people. This shouldn't be interpreted as him not wanting love, as once he gets comfortable, he will be calling you from across the room. He is the biggest softy cat I've met. From Foster to future parent, I will say some scratches behind his ear will go a long way. He has this funny tendency of dropping all his body weight if you continuously scratch him in this spot. Also pays more attention to strings than any other type of toy (except some catnip smelling toy mouses) What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats in my previous home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

My medical notes are...

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

KNOWN HISTORY:: Blackberry was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 8/15/25 Behind the litter box, crouched inside the den. Allows petting with the scratcher tool. Remains immobile and lip licks throughout the interaction. Placed a hidey sign on the cubby door for some privacy to help him acclimate. 8/17/25 Vol. Hiding in cubby behind privacy cover. When the door was opened, he was crouched with widely dilated eyes and tried to lower himself down to further hide behind some blankets. Briefly followed a pipe cleaner toy with his eyes, then crouched back further and lip-licked. Allowed head scratches with the tool and blinked a few times, but otherwise remained frozen in place.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back,Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Blackberry was inside the den upon approach, facing the back wall. When the den cover was lifted, he curiously raised his head with wide eyes and dilated pupils. He leaned away from the scratcher tool but remained immobile while allowing petting through the side portal. The assessment was ended early to reduce stress. Blackberry tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
