Marge
Hello, my name is Marge. My animal id is #225957. I am a female tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 4/29/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormMarge arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. During her stay at the care center Marge has been observed to be highly fearful. In kennel Marge has been observed to retreat to the back of the kennel when handlers approach. She has also been observed to escalate to charging the front of the kennel when handlers attempt to leash her. During her assessment Marge was noted to be panting and lip licking during contact. With a very slow approach, Marge has slowly warmed up to select handlers and allowed both handling and petting. Medically, she is apparently healthy.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Summary:: 5/7/25: Marge greets another dog at the gate with a neutral body. The other dog licks her snoot through the fence and she growls and barks. She is allowed to greet another dog and she is tense, hard eyes, hackles raised.
Summary (4):: 5/14/25: Marge comes to the front with a loose and wiggly body. She is wiggly back and forth at the front but handler offers her a treat and slowly placed the loop over her head. Once out of kennel, she pulls hard towards the neighboring kennels, her front legs slightly elevated. She is walked on the street where she turns to handler frequently, jumps ups, paws on torso and accepts petting. She allows handler to dry her off with a towel. She pulls hard towards the kennels on her way back to kennel and goes in without issue. 5/9/25: Marge is standing in her kennel as handler approaches. She is comfortable receiving treats through her kennel door bars. When handler unlocks the door and presents their leash, she begins to back away from the front each time the leash got closer to her. She would reproach the front when the handler would move the leash and re close the door. When she approaches the door close enough to where her head could slightly stick out of the kennel, she is able clipped to her collar with ease and is slowly taken the yard. In the yard, she would slowly walk around the perimeter with a tense body and tucked tail. She was nervous of walking into the pens and would coax her body to the ground. She was able to return back to her kennel slowly with no issue. 5/7/25: Marge is sitting at the front of the kennel with a neutral body. As handler greets her with soft talk her body is soft and her tail shifts under her. She stands up and handler is able to slowly shift her collar to be clipped with a flat leash in kennel. She then quickly exits the kennel and pulls moderately out of the room. She is brought to the backyard where she does a dog-dog interaction then is brought into the pen on a drag leash. She walks around the yard social with the handler in pen, jumping up exuberantly with a soft body and wagging tail. She allows petting on her head and back. After handler grabs a toy for her and she is brought back to kennel where the toy is used to distract her as handler unclips the flat collar. She is given the toy and the interaction is ended.
Summary (5):: 5/5/25: Marge is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. She briefly lip licks as kennel door is unlocked. Handler gives her treats through the kennel bars which she consumes. When leash is slowly presented she retreats and begins to dodge it. Even with the use of treats as lure, she remains hesitant and will completely retreat to the back when the leash is close to her. After several attempts, handler is able to leash her, but she immediately retreats and mildly thrashes, knocking and spilling her water bowl, causing her to scramble in kennel. Handler braced door and continued trying to toss treats. Marge is removed from kennel and taken to the yard for a walk. She remains neutral bodied but when pet, becomes tense, lip licks, and will occasionally whale eye. She does not seek handler attention, and is on high alert in the yard. At one point, she places both her front paws on handler chest for a moment, but her body remains stiff, she is still lip licking, and slightly whale eyeing. Handler uses body block movement to get her to get off. She shakes off and handler walks her around the pen. Handler attempted to put her on a drag leash, but when her collar is touched she becomes tense. Handler aborts and brings her back to kennel. Upon return she briefly kennel fights and handler has to use muscle to go into kennel and to keep her on the wall.
Summary (6):: 5/3/25: Marge is asleep at the back of her kennel but awakens as the kennel door is being unlocked. She comes forward, soft body and low wagging tail. Handler attempts to leash her but she moves away. She has a collar on so handler kneels down and is able to clip the leash to the collar. She is walked to the street where she remains very close to handlers legs, almost pressed up against them. In the behavior room, she approaches the other handler with a soft body and low wagging tail. She allows for the assessment but becomes increasingly more stressed, panting and pacing. Handler sits and Marge places her head on handlers lap. She returns to kennel without issue. 5/2/25: Marge is at the front neutral body low wagging tail when handler approaches her speaking in a high pitch voice. She does not take treats but remains at the front. Handler presented leash and she moves away from it, not completely retreating to the back. Handler attempts to drape the leash over her but she moves her head away. When leash stops moving or is removed, she comes to the front but will move away from the leash. Several minutes are spent attempting to leash her, using toys and various treats but she is not interested in them enough to remain at the front for leashing. Eventually she squats to relieve herself and handler is able to quickly drape the loop around her neck and secure the leash. She comes out readily and is walked in the yard. She is neutral bodied and explores and watches the other dogs with neutral body. She allows for brief petting on her back and chin and returns to kennel without issue.
Summary (7):: 5/1/25: Marge is laying at the back of her kennel when handler approaches. Handler tosses treats which she eats. Handler then offers treats through the bars and at first she will not take them from handlers hand but after a few minutes of tossing treats she eventually takes them from handlers hand. When leash is presented she treats and will not come forwards for treats. Various types of treats are attempted, liver, jerky, chicken and spray cheese, non are high value enough to convince her to stay at the front long enough for leashing. When handler kneels at the front she will come forward low wagging tail and sniff handler through the bars but moves away whenever the leash or handler moves. A hook with a leash attached is used to leash her. She dodges the leash, moving her head away from the leash. She barks at the leash once before the leash is able to be secured. Once it is secured she comes to the front and readily steps out of kennel and is walked in the yard. She is neutral bodied, low hanging tail. She does not seek handler attention. She is then easily returned to kennel. 5/1/25: ACS report that Marge is highly fearful in kennel. A long leash and hook had to be used to lasso them at the back of the kennel. The lassoing took a few attempts.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Marge so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (Under 13): Due to Marge's fearful nature and touch sensitivity we recommend a home with no children. Place with a New Hope Partner: Based on the listed behavioral challenges below such as her handling sensitivity and only allowing a select few staff members to handle her since intake, We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Anxiety
Potential challenges comments:: Handling/Touch Sensitivity: When attempting to pet Marge during her handling assessment she is noted to become tense multiple times and lip licks. It is important to always go slow and give Marge the option to walk away from any social interaction. She should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Marge’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Dog may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful: Marge has allowed minimal handling since arriving at the care centers and shies away from leashing frequently while cowering in the back of kennel with a tense body. It is important to always go slow and give Marge the option to walk away from any social interaction. Marge should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Marge ’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Marge would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Anxiety: While assessing Marge she is observed to frequently pant and lip licks when uncomfortable. We have no history on her behavior in a home environment, so we do not know if this will occur outside of the care center. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety.
