Summary:: Due to handling sensitivities we are not able to conduct a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (7):: 3/26/24: Lil Lucky is laying in the kennel when the handler approaches. He approaches the front of the kennel and takes treats gently. When the handler opens the door Lil Lucky backs up but approaches again for more treats. Handler attempts to lure him through the leash loop with treats but he backs away every time they move the loop towards him. He retreats in the kennel and handler lassos him. Once leashed he begins to thrash before coming out of the kennel. He is taken to the backyard where he sniffs and relieves himself, aloof to the handler. He does not take treats outside. He is easily clipped but thrashes before the stairs. Eventually he stops and continues walking, he is returned to kennel without issue. He shakes off in the kennel and eats treats again.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Lil Lucky is described to have medium energy. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner,Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: Due to how uncomfortable Lil Lucky is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Due to hard barking and growling at unfamiliar dogs we feel that Lil Lucky should not visit dog parks. We recommend that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward based, force free training can be utilized to help Dog associate dogs with things he enjoys such as toys or treats. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Lil Lucky will hover with a tense body, growl and snap when toys, food and treats are in his possession. Lil Lucky's previous owner notes that he will become tense hover and will growl and snap when toys, food or treats are in his possession. We recommend that Lil Lucky be left alone while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Lil Lucky's mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Handling Sensitivity/ Fearful Defensive: Lil Lucky has growled, snapped and attempts to bite when his paw was handled, when being held and restrained, collar grabbed. It is important to avoid touching Lil Lucky's paws at this time and to be cautious when touching him in other areas as we do not know where he may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Lil Lucky to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivities and Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
