Pre-Screener Form

Oriana is at risk due to behavioral reasons. While in care she has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to snap at the leash while in kennel when handlers attempt to leash her. While on leash, Oriana will escalate to thrashing intensely and flipping. Recently, Oriana has been receptive to spray cheese. Medically, Oriana is apparently healthy.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

Date of intake:: 4/24/2026

Spay/Neuter status:: No

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray, No known history

Date of assessment:: 4/28/2026

Summary:: Oriana has been observed to be highly fearful while in care. Noted to thrash intensely while on leash and snap at the leash while in kennel. Due to the high level of fear, stress, and anxiety, Oriana is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary (7):: 4/28/26: Oriana is laying at the front of the kennel when the handler approaches. The handler offers her high value treats such as spray cheese. When the handler moves away she is receptive and eats it slowly. 4/26/26: Oriana is sitting in her kennel. She does not take treats and is tense. When the handler opens the door she backs up to the back wall of her kennel. The leash is draped over her head and she is brought out of kennel. She immediately begins thrashing and flipping. The thrashing is extreme so she is put back in kennel very quickly (muscled in). She stands there panting heavily once back in kennel. The leash is removed with a hook. 4/26/26: Oriana is sitting in her kennel. She does not take treats. She is tense. The handler attempts to leash her by draping the leash over her and she snaps at it and vocalizes (screams/barks). The walk is abandoned due to FAS. 4/24/26: It is reported on the behavior board that Oriana is scared and thrashes on leash when being removed from her kennel.

Date of intake:: 4/24/2026

Summary:: Loose relaxed body, allowed pick up

Date of initial:: 4/24/2026

Summary:: Neutral body, tail tucked, allows pick up and handling, whale eyed

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Oriana so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Oriana has been observed to snap at the leash when handlers attempt to leash her. Once she is on leash, Oriana begins thrashing intensely while on leash. It is important to move slowly with Oriana, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
