Bluey Huey
Hello, my name is Bluey Huey . My animal id is #243898. I am a desexed male brown brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/17/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- cannot afford to care for.
Bluey Huey is at risk due to behavior concerns. Bluey Huey has begun to deteriorate at the care center. He is observed to be panting in kennel and darting back and forth on leash when out for a walk. He has been uncomfortable with certain handling, avoiding leashing and head whipping when attempting to pick up and place into a kennel. During an interaction, he head whipped towards an the handlers hand as they were petting him. He has also been observed to growl and show teeth in kennel when in possession of an item. His previous owners state that he barks at strangers initially but then becomes friendly and outgoing. Medically, Blue Huey is underweight but otherwise healthy.

Bluey Huey came to ACC as an owner surrender after his family shared they could no longer meet the needs of an active young dog. Bluey is described as playful, friendly, and high-energy-he loves attention and can be a total goof once he feels comfortable. In the shelter, he's shown some sensitivity around handling (especially being picked up) and has escalated when food is involved, so he's looking for an experienced adopter who can help him feel safe, set clear routines, and build positive skills with reward-based training. My Ideal Home Bluey Huey would do best with an experienced, adult household (or adults with teens) that can provide structure, daily exercise, and brain games. He'll benefit from force-free training focused on impulse control (jumping up), calm greetings, and cooperative handling. Because he's a young, active dog with a history of destructiveness and anxiety when left alone, he'll need plenty of appropriate enrichment (puzzle feeders, long-lasting chews, training sessions, scent games) and a plan for gradual alone-time training so he isn't left for long stretches right away. Good with Other Pets? In his previous home, Bluey Huey lived with a cat and was reported to be friendly and outgoing with both dogs and cats. We recommend slow, structured introductions and thoughtful management-especially around food and high-value items-to set everyone up for success. Leash Manners Bluey Huey has a mild pull and generally ignores people and dogs on walks. He may react to fast-moving triggers (like bikes/scooters/traffic), so a front-clip harness and positive reinforcement work around those sights and sounds will help him stay focused and confident. Other Fun Facts Bluey Huey is treat-motivated, affectionate, and eager to learn-once he trusts you, he's all about snuggles and attention. Give him outlets for his big puppy energy, and you'll have a fun, devoted pet!

Summary (6):: 1/27/26: ACS report that Bluey is showing signs of kennel deterioration, such as finger painting his kennel with feces, jumping up, and heavily panting. He is also observed to dart back and forth while on leash. 1/21/26: BLuey Huey is stading at the front of his kennel with neutral body. He takes a treat offered. He is easily leashed and lifted out of the top kennel. He is walked on the street where he remsins neutral body sniffing his surroundings. He will turn towards noises. He will sit for treats and take treats gently from handlers hand. He is easily clipped and returned to a bottom kennel due to reports of head whipping when being picked up.
Summary (7):: 1/15/26- Bluey Huey is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body, when handler attempts to leash he retreats a little. Handler softly talks to him and holds treats out, he comes forward and eats them. Handler is finally able to leash. He allowed handler to pick him up from his top kennel and once in the hallway he was bouncy, he went up to various staff greeting with a loose and wiggly body jumping up with his front legs on their legs. He is taken for a street walk. He has a mild to moderate pulls at times to spots to sniff. He is social with handler and gently takes treats. Handler pets Bluey exuberantly, he jumps around and runs to the end of the leash, play bows then runs back to handler. He is bouncy going back and forth. When handler pets his side he leans into their legs. When people pass he has a mild pull towards them wanting to greet with a soft body. Handler pets again exuberantly and he again is bouncing around doing play boys. When returning he again greets staff. He allows handler to pick him up and returned to his top kennel without issue. 1/15/26: (LATE ENTRY): It was reported by a staff member that during and adoption interaction, Bluey was a little fearful due to the client making a loud high pitch sound. The staff member advised the potential adopter to stay quiet and have a low voice during the interaction and they were receptive. After a few minutes, Bluey approached the potential adopter with a neutral body and wagging tail. The potential adopter was petting Bluey in the appropriate places, and he then snapped back his head to try to go after the adopter's hand. The interaction was ended. When the staff member was putting Bluey back into his top kennel, he was head whipping a lot so another staff member came to assist and they threw some treats down and picked him up with no issue. 12/28/25: Bluey Huey is observed to bare teeth and charge towards handlers in kennel while in the possession of food. 12/18/25: Bluey Huey is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is offered treats and accepts them gently before handler unlocks the kennel door. Bluey is flighty and will back away and tense up when he thinks handler is going to lift him. He is gently coaxed with treats and pets to the front of the kennel which he leans into and accepts gently. Eventually he allows handler to lift and place him on the floor, he pulls moderately out the building to the street. Once outside he pulls more mildly and walks with handler ignoring people and dogs he sees. After walking for a bit he is brought back inside for his behavior assessment, once finished he is lifted and returned to kennel.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Bluey Huey is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Bluey Huey.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to handling sensitivity and resource guarding we recommend a home with no children.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Bluey has been obsvered to bare teeth and charge towards handers in kennel while in the possession of food. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Bluey's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Destructive Behavior: Bluey's previous owner states that he is destructive in the home with items such as walls and other household items. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Bluey will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so they can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Basic Manners: Bluey's previous owner states that he will jump up often. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Handling Sensitivity: Bluey's previous owner states that he will bark when held/ restrained. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Bluey to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Separation Anxiety: Bluey's previous owner states that he will become anxious when left alone. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and be prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. They would do best in a home where a person is home for a large part of the day or with a plan so they are not alone for long periods of time. Please see handout on Separation Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Bluey's previous owner states that he will hard bark and growl towards bikes, scooters, and traffic. Bluey will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. anxious when left alone in the home.
