With handler Prince walks with the handler on a slack leash and a neutral body. Medically Prince has Mild-Moderate Dental Disease. Prince arrived at MACC as an owner surrender. In his previous owner Prince is reported to resource guard his owner, be sensitive to handling, be reactive while on leash and have a multiple bite history. During his assessment Prince was observed to quickly escalate to baring teeth, lunging, growling, and snapping. Due to the detailed behavior we recommend an experienced adult only, single pet home that makes no trips to the dog park.

SO: Recheck CIRDC, last day of doxycycline. BAR eent: No ODC, moderate white NDC. h/l: Coughing noted during exam. Eupneic. msi: ambulatory x4 neuro: mentation alert and appropriate A: CIRDC - not fully resolved P: 50mg doxycycline PO SID extend x 4 additional days. Recheck scheduled for 8/21 to evaluate if can d/c vs. change antibiotics.

Recheck CIRDC BAR, eating well. No ODC or NDC noted. CIRDC resolved. Removed "under the weather" tag and OK to d/c medications.

Basic Information:: Prince is a 6 year old SMB dog. He is seeking a new home due to housing issues. He has prior experience with adults, children, cats, and dogs.

Previously lived with:: 2 adults, 1 child, 1 dog

For a New Family to Know: Prince is an independent and solitary guy who prefers contact on his own terms. He is usually aloof/mellow but with his chosen people he is social and affectionate. Prince has experience going to a groomer and loves bath time. He also allows for family to bathe/brush. Prince is used to going on walks for 10-15 minutes once or twice per day. He has experience in a crate, but cars make him nervous. Prince is a great companion and guard dog for his chosen people! He loves belly rubs once he's comfortable.

Summary:: Prince was recently surrendered to MACC due to his owner passing away. It is reported that Prince prefers contact on his terms and will snap if his personal space is not respected. Prince has bitten children who continue to pet him when he walks away, but they also report that he will bite strangers that approach him. Prince is also reported to have fought the resident dog while guarding the owner. None of Prince’s bites have broken skin in many months. Prince is said to bark, growl, and snap towards strangers and children and will bark and growl at dogs and cats. Prince will become tense, growl, bark, snap, and has bitten while resource guarding his owner. Prince will escalate to barking, growling, snapping, and biting when held/restrained and when startled. He will also bark and growl when his paws are touched. While in care, Prince has presented as aloof. During his assessment, Prince was initially aloof. However, after the assessment was completed Prince sat next to the primary handler. As the secondary handler went to re-leash Prince, he began to resource guard the primary handler (low growling with a very tense body). As the handler attempts to place the slip leash on, Prince lunges and snaps at the leash. Prince is moved away from the primary handler using the dragline and is able to be lassoed. Prince continues to reapproach the primary handler and then stands in front of them while facing the secondary handler. When the secondary handler attempts to unclip the drag line attached to Prince's collar and he begins to bare teeth and persistently snaps towards them. The handler offers treats and spray cheese, Prince is not receptive and he begins growling and snapping again. The secondary handler then puts on animal handling gloves, while the primary handler straight arms him using the dragline. The second handler was then able to unclip his drag leash as main handler kept him on a short leash facing the opposite way. Due to the quick escalation in behavior Prince is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary:: According to Prince's previous owner(s), Prince will bark and growl at other dogs. Prince lived with a male intact small mixed breed in his previous home. 8/26/26: Prince is introduced to a novel neutered male and is loose at the fence with high wags. He shakes off and reapproaches remaining loose, sniffing nose to nose through the fence. He follows the other dog along the fence line. The other dog is let into the yard and Prince engages in mutual sniffing remaining loose. The other dog disengages and Prince independently sniffs in the yard and then attempts to solicit interaction again, but the other dog does not engage. Prince redirects without issue and continues sniffing the yard.

Summary (7):: 8/24/26: Prince was at front of his kennel with a neutral body where he was leashed and taken for a street walk. Prince walks next to the handler with a slack leash and a neutral body. He stops to sniff and investigate his surroundings a couple of times. He stays aloof during his walk. After his walk he is returned to kennel with no issue. 7/27/26: As handler approaches Prince's kennel he is at the front with a neutral body. He would dodge the leash but handler was able to toss it over his head. Once on, he readily exits the kennel and walks on a loose leash alongside the handler. Prince is then taken for a street walk, where he would remain aloof throughout the walk. Shortly after, Prince is brought back for his assessment - once completed as handler went to go re-leash Prince, he would begin to resource guard the other handler. He would sit near them and begin to low growl as handler approaches. Handler would attempt to unclip the drag line attached to Prince's collar and he would begin to bare teeth and persistently snap towards handler. Animal handling gloves are then placed on for safety purposes, distance is kept short with the slip lead being fed through the drag line and placed over his head. As handler continues to get close to remove the drag leash, he would continue to snap at the main handler. Main handler would grab spray cheese, which he would show small interest in and go back to growling and snapping. The second handler was then able to unclip his drag leash as main handler kept him on a short leash facing the opposite way. He is then brought back to the kennel room and is clipped inside with no issue and placed into his kennel.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the multiple bite history and the behavior reported in the previous home we recommend an adult only home. No Cats: Due to barking and growling towards cats, we recommend a home with no cats. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to the bite history in the home and the on leash reactivity we recimmend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Prince's previous owner states that he will guard the owner and has escalated to biting. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Destructive Behavior: Prince's previous owner states that he is destructive in the home. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Prince will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so they can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Handling Sensitivity: Prince's previous owner states that he will bark, growl, snap, and bite when held/restrained and will bark and growl when his paws are touched. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Prince to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive: Prince's previous owner states that he will bark, growl, lunge, snap, and bite when startled. It is important to move slowly with Prince, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Multiple Bite History/Bite History (Human/Dog): Please see bite history above for more details. Escalating to biting is a behavior that Prince has rehearsed repeatedly over their life. This behavior is likely to continue as it has become part of Prince's repertoire, and will need careful management to work toward reducing triggers for Prince and reducing the resulting bites. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. Anxiety: Prince's previous owner states that he is anxious in the home. If Prince displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Prince's previous owner states that he will bark or attempt to bite strangers and dogs that approach. Prince will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior.
