Animal Profile

Samme

Hello, my name is Samme. My animal id is #206355. I am a male orange cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 14 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 7/31/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- homeless.

Samme is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Samme is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Samme tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. A volunteer writes: I'm so proud to tell you what I know about this very special guy. While I can't say Samme's jumping at the chance to be my friend, his previous person described him as a kitty who likes to make contact on his own terms but is friendly with everyone - children, adults, and even other cats. Samme loves to play with his toys and with his cat buddy. With such a full and loving life, we know that dear Samme is trying his best, but right now he's in a bit of a pickle. He's a gorgeous senior gentleman who was brought to us due to his person's housing issues. Coming into the Care Center hasn't been the easiest transition, but all he needs is a chance to be the cat he is and is meant to be. We know he has been a very well loved cat and we want that for him again.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 8/4/24 Vol. Samme was lying in his litter box, with his head resting against the wall. I offered treats but he did not move from that position. I petted him with the scratcher and he nervously licked his lips and watched the movements of the scratcher He is 14 years old and is probably not quite comfortable in the shelter yet. 8/8/24 FB79 Inside his den when i approach Samme, has big dilated eyes and begins to back up when i lift the den cover for a better view. He isn't interested in any of the treats that i toss in there for him but he does tolerate petting on his head and cheekies with the tool. Super sweet boy just needs some time. 8/15/24 FB1261 In cat den upon approach, body and face neutral, tail curled around feet and pupils dilated. He tolerates all petting from within his den while tensing slightly. He shows no signs of escalation, however he is unsure and prefers to remain hidden at this time. 8/18/24 Vol. Samme was inside her den. When I lifted the cover, she just stared out at me. She didn’t come out to test the Temptations left for her. I was able to pet her with the scratcher, which she tolerated calmly. She is an older, very subdued girl. 8/25/24 Vol. Samme was in his den. I lifted the cover and he stared back at me with wide eyes. I petted him with the scratcher, which he accepted, without any response. He tolerated it but stayed in his den, lying down. He seemed to be listening intently as I spoke to him. Very calm cat. 8/30/24 FB58 In his den and completely hidden from view. Cannot coax out with treats or when spoken to softly for some time. When I lift the cage cover, he is sitting on his hip and propped up on his front feet and stares at me with his eyes wide and dilated, ears forward. He does not react to anything and is tolerant of pets but again remains frozen for most. Seems depressed. 9/5/24 FB68 In den, cant be coaxed out. When the den cover and door are removed, he sits and stares at me with eyes wide and dilated, face and body slightly tensed. He remains frozen throughout the interaction, even through petting. 9/12/24 FB1261 Samme has been showing consistent behaviors in our care center and has not shown improvement with daily interactions or enrichment offered. For this reason, the feline behavior team is going to discontinue recording daily behavior notes in Shelter Buddy. He is still going to receive daily enrichment and we will continue to monitor their behavior. Notes will resume if we notice any changes in behavior.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Samme would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: On approach, Samme is in his den and cannot be coaxed out when offered treats or when spoken to softly. When the den cover is removed, he is sitting with a tense and frozen face and body, eyes wide and dilated. He then turns to face the back corner of the den with a hunched body. He is tolerant of touch with the tool but remains tense and frozen. Pick up is not attempted to prevent further FAS. Samme displayed similar behaviors during his re-assessment. Samme tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
