Buddy
Hello, my name is Buddy. My animal id is #207855. I am a desexed male white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 12 years 1 months 4 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 7/17/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- cannot afford to care for.
Buddy is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Buddy has been increasingly displaying reactivity towards other dogs when passing there kennels and strangers on walks, lunging at a stranger. Buddy has not been acclimating well in his kennel, jumping on his kennel door and barking throughout the day despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Medically, Buddy is a senior dog with periodontal disease but other wise in good health currently.

His story is one of loyalty and resilience-he was originally left in her care by a friend who never returned, and she did everything she could to keep him safe and fed, even amid eviction threats. Now 12 years young, Buddy is looking for a soft place to land for his golden years. **My ideal home:** Buddy would do best with a patient, adult household that understands the needs of a senior dog. He enjoys peace and quiet, familiar routines, and the occasional peanut butter treat. A home with gentle structure, soft bedding, and a human who respects his boundaries would be perfect. **Good with kids?** Buddy should go to a home without young children (under 5), as he prefers interactions on his own terms and needs a calm, understanding environment. **Good with other pets?** In his previous home, Buddy was tolerant of familiar dogs but preferred slow introductions. He recently met a female dog here at the shelter and politely sniffed before walking away-he's not looking for a playmate, but might do well with **Fun facts:** 🍽 Favorite food: Purina with rotisserie chicken and eggs 🎾 Favorite treat: Peanut butter A volunteer writes: Buddy ❤️🩹 12 is no age to find yourself in a shelter. Buddy should in a home, on an orthopedic bed, being cherished and loved on in his golden years. And it seems he had a loving home for the last several years, until financial hardship and a difficult no pet policy took it all away from him. I saw Buddy this past weekend, enjoying the rare space of a double kennel run. I paused to watch him napping on his sunny bed peacefully. He caught me and came over to say hi, wagging his tail the whole way over. I gave him all my extra treats, but Buddy deserves more than a few walks a day and stray treats from my pouch. He deserves everything. As our kennels begin to fill back up, the extra space he had has already been taken up by another dog in need. Buddy is available to most homes (level 2 adopter).

Summary:: According to Buddy's previous owner(s), He is tolerant of familiar dogs and with unfamiliar dogs. He has no off-leash experience and prefers contact on his own terms. 08/07/25 Buddy is introduced at the gate to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Buddy will approach the gate appearing nervous as he displays paw raises. Buddy will lay down along the gate line in appeasement as the male dog offers bounces behind the gate. Buddy appears overwhelmed, walking away from the gate, displacing as he sniffs away from the gate line. Buddy seeks attention from the handler in his pen, reluctant to return to the gate. This concludes the interaction. 07/20/25 Buddy is introduced at the gate to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Buddy will approach the gate with a neutral frame, standing adjacent to the novel female dog, as she displays a softer, wigglier frame. Buddy will scent the novel female dog through the gate and where she remains soft and wiggly, Buddy will chuff, and walk away to displace, scenting away from the gate. The novel female dog turns her attention to the handlers in her pen, becoming disinterested in Buddy while Buddy seeks an exit. Both dogs are returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.
Summary (5):: 9/16/25: Buddy is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. His body becomes loose as the handler opens the door and he eagerly takes treats as he is leashed. When walking through the room, Buddy is on a short leash between two handlers and does not kennel fight. Outside, Buddy sniffed for most of the walk. As an AC staff walked up to a gate, Buddy tensed up and watched them as they crossed the street and continued to watch even as Buddy walked down the sidewalk and entered the building through the first gate. At this moment, a dog began to bark through a door and Buddy began to pull hard into the building and all the way back into his kennel where he was secured safely.
Summary (6):: 9/13/25: Buddy is at the front of his kennel with a loose/wiggly body, and removed from his kennel with no issue. Buddy will walk through the kennel rooms, and begin to kennel fight, lunging and hard barking. Buddy is taken through a quiet hallway and outside, where he pulls mildly, exploring his surroundings and leaning into contact when coaxed. Buddy does see any passing dogs, and walks with loose body the entire way. Going back to kennel, Buddy will not kennel fight and pulls hard back to his kennel once in the room. 09/05/25: It is noted on the white board that Buddy lunged at a person while on a walk. 9/4: Buddy could be seen alternating between jumping on his kennel door while barking and then would turn around and bark at his saddle doors. 8/30/25: Buddy has notes on the board indicating to be walked out of the closest door, possibly to kennel fighting which has not been reported or observed specifically. Buddy is noted on his walks to be very social and not react on leash towards other dogs. 08/22/25 (Trainer Note): Buddy is sleeping on his bed as the handler approaches. He stands and comes to the front, allowing himself to be leashed without issue. He pulls mildly to the canine training room and leans into contact with the handler. Handler works briefly with Buddy on "leave it" but he repeatedly attempts to lean into contact. Handler pets him for several minutes and he is returned to kennel without issue. 08/16/25 (Trainer Note): Buddy is sleeping on his bed as the handler approaches, he wakes up when he hears the leash jangling and comes to the front of his kennel tapping his paws with a loose wiggly body. Buddy is easily leashed and walks calmly to the Live Room. When inside, Buddy is wiggly and solicits pets from the handler. He is clipped to a drag leash and he begins working on the leave it cue with the handler. Buddy is able to leave an open palm of treats after being given a verbal cue. The handler begins to generalize the cue by moving the treats closer to the floor. Buddy can leave a closed fist of treats on cue. Buddy solicits more pets, leaning into the handler for affection and pets. Buddy jumps at the handler twice, but will sit on cue and accept further pets as reinforcement. Buddy is easily releashed and safely returned to his kennel.
Summary (7):: 08/09/25 (Trainer Note): Buddy is standing at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and walks calmly to the Live Room. When inside, Buddy is clipped to a drag leash and immediately leans into the handler for affection. The handler will regularly pause and stop petting Buddy, and Buddy will continuously come back for attention. The handler begins to work on a leave it cue with Buddy with a fist full of treats. Buddy sees the handler's hand and will exuberantly give the handler a high five with both paws. The handler continues to teach the cue with their hand in an upturned fist to not confuse Buddy. Buddy can leave a closed fist of treats with ease. The handler then begins to work on some polite exchange with Buddy. Buddy will bounce around and toss a stuffed toy in the air, eventually dropping at the handler's feet to be reinforced with another toy. After four repetitions, Buddy lies down on the floor and will roll around on his back. Buddy will return to the handler to solicit more pets before being re leashed and safely returned to his kennel. 08/07/25: Buddy is lying down in the back of his kennel and will get up slowly and walk to the front, allowing the handler to leash him with ease. He would then be brought to the play yard to meet a playmate. Once inside the yard, he will display a neutral frame and begin displacement sniffing around the yard. He will approach the gate for nose-to-nose greeting, but then he will walk away and continue displacement sniffing. Buddy will be brought back to his kennel safely without any issues. 8/1/25: Buddy is at the back of his kennel laying down when the handler approaches, and when approaches begins to become loose/wiggly, is easily leashed and brought into the office. Buddy explores each of the enrichment items placed in the office, leans into contact from multiple staff members and continues to engage intermittently with both. Buddy after a bit is brought back to kennel with no issue. 07/18/25 (Assessment note): Buddy is standing at the front of his kennel and allows handlers to leash him while maintaining a neutral frame. He is then escorted to the assessment room, where he eats cheese and allows handlers to place a collar and drag leash on him. Buddy tolerates handling and touch and maintains a loose, wiggly tail while running alongside the handler. Buddy is returned to his kennel safely without any issues. For more information, see behavior assessment.

Summary:: soft body, wagging tail, allows handling
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Buddy's resource guarding and lunging at strangers on walks, we recommend an adult-only home.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: In the prior home it is reported that Bussy will resource guard food and random objects but not specified in what way as the Owner never attempted to take the items of value from him. Training should include building trust, using positive reinforcement for trading exercises, and avoiding confrontational approaches to reduce guarding tendencies. Please see the handout on Resource guarding. Anxiety: In the prior home Buddy is noted to have general anxiety.Training should focus on reducing stress through enrichment, structured interactions, and gradual exposure to new environments or stimuli. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety. Strength/leash pulling/ On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Buddy is noted in the prior home to pulls hard when on leash and barks often. On walks he is reported to be reactive to moving objects and will growl, bark or snap at them. He recently has begun to lunge at strangers on walks. Training should include loose-leash walking techniques, desensitization to triggers, and reinforcing calm behavior during walks to improve leash manners and reduce reactivity. Please see the handout on Strength/leash pulling/ On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
