Duke
Hello, my name is Duke. My animal id is #140586. I am a desexed male gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/10/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving.
Duke is on the at risk list due to previous behaviors in his previous home and behavior in the care centers. Duke in the care centers has displayed a high level of reactivity in his previous stay towards other dogs, lunging and snarling at them when seeing them. Duke has also been noted to lunge at strangers that enter the home, and small animals on walks. Duke has also displayed reactivity towards traffic/strangers on his walks, also lunging at them making it it difficult to walk him safely. Medically, Duke has dental disease.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I need a home where there are no other dogs. I need a home without cats or small animals. I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy!

Summary (6):: 5/23/25: Duke is observed to lunge at several dogs on his walk with an ACS staff member, lunging, hard barking and growling until the dog was out of sight of Duke. Duke was not able to be refocused while he was reacting and had to be pulled along to be out of sight of the other dog. 5/19/25 (trainer note): Duke was standing at the front of his kennel with a loose frame. He is easily leashed and walked to the behavior office, ignoring the surrounding barking dogs. He is placed on a drag lead and is loose and wiggly as he follows the handler around the room. He began to counter surf but was easily redirected with a squeaker and able to orient towards the provided enrichment instead. He orients towards the handler and will auto sit between items. He was able to practice breath work and takes treats from hands gently. He was easily leashed and returned to his kennel without issue. 05/17/25: Duke is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. When the kennel door is cracked open, Duke lowers his head to scent the ground and handler is able to drop the lead over his head easily. Duke walks with a neutral frame out to the ramp leading to the play yards. Once he notices a dog further ahead, his body tenses and he becomes hypervigilant, pulling mildly in the dog's direction. Duke is easily redirected forward and once in the yard, is clipped to a drag lead and free to explore the space. He is highly treat motivated, will sit when cued, and takes treats gently from hand. Duke accepts petting along his head, neck, and body with a neutral frame. After his session, he is walked past another dog in a play yard and shows no reaction. Duke is returned to kennel safely. 05/11/25: Duke is standing at the front of his kennel and initially puts his head down to the floor as the handler attempts to leash him, but on the second attempt, he is leashed with ease and escorted outside for a walk. While out, Duke displays a neutral frame and walks past dogs with little to no reaction. However, he becomes reactive toward two people sitting at a light on a moped. Duke continues his walk on a loose leash, though he hard pulls at times as he explores the environment and relieves himself. He is brought back to his kennel safely with no issues
Summary (7):: 05/01/25 (trainer note): Duke is standing at the front of his kennel with a neutral frame. He is easily leashed and walked to the behavior office. When passing barking dogs in crates, his body stiffened up, but he was easily redirected with light leash pressure. When in the room, he immediately engaged with the enrichment and would orient towards the handler and auto sit. He was able to practice "place" and breath work. He was easily leashed and returned to kennel. 04/24/25 (trainer note): Duke is standing at the front of his kennel with a neutral frame. He is easily leashed and walked to the behavior office. He explores the room with a loose, wiggly body. He engages with the various enrichment items throughout the room and will readily orient towards the handler. He automatically sits between items and was able to practice breath work. When handler sits down, he approached with a loose tail wag and leans into handler for pets. He was returned to kennel with no issues. 04/16/25 During play group Duke will become aroused as he and the handler present wait for the next dog to arrive. Duke is highly treat motivated, fixated on one of the handler's treats. He will approach, sit, become unsettled, displaying wide-eyes and visibly vibrating. When the handler isn't quick in administering treats, he will jump onto the handler and attempt to eat from their treat pouch. The handler must toss the treats away in order to create distance. After a while Duke begins to runs circles around the pen, becoming tense and vocalizing. Duke body checks handlers and becomes more aroused, unable to self-regulate. One of the handlers grabs the drag leash after stepping on it and as the handler lifts the leash Duke will stop and side-eye the leash. The handler quickly walks Duke around pen and scatters treats. (Additional information in BA located in dog-to-dog section). 04/11/25: Duke is standing at the front of his kennel with a neutral frame, allowing handler to leash him with ease. Potential challenges comments:: Destructive behavior: Duke is noted in the prior home to become destructive in the home. Providing a structured routine and ensuring he has appropriate outlets for his energy can significantly reduce his tendency to be destructive. This approach helps channel his energy into positive activities, preventing boredom and frustration that often lead to destructive actions. Please the handout on Destructive behavior. Basic manners/Social hyperarousal/Mouthiness: In Duke's past stay in 2022 he was noted in care to jumps up in a social manner on handler often. Duke also mouth with hard pressure and was hard to settle down during his 2022 handling assessment.Redirecting his mouthiness to chew toys and stopping play when he mouths with hard pressure can help. Consistent training and rewarding calm behavior will aid in managing his excitement, ensuring he learns to interact appropriately with handlers and others. Please see the handout on Basic manners/Social hyperarousal/Mouthiness. Kennel presence/On Leash Reactivity/barrier frustration/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Duke was noted in his past stay in 2022 to growl, hard bark and lunge towards other dogs on leash and in kennel.
