Cliff
Hello, my name is Cliff. My animal id is #212932. I am a male tan dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 10/23/2024.
Cliff is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Cliff has been struggling within the care center despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Cliff has began to leash bite while on walks intermittently throughout his time in the care center and has made contact on a staff members arm, although Cliff can be refocused with treats it is difficult to consistently walk him safely. Medically, Cliff is apparently healthy.

I will need positive outlets for my energy! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

Summary:: Due to Cliff entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded 11/21/24 Cliff is introduced to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Cliff will greet her at the gate with a loose frame, offering her bounces. Cliff is taken inside to greet her face-to-face. Cliff will pull towards her, panting heavily, forcibly sniffing her genitals. This makes her uncomfortable, so she moves away. Cliff is persistent, following her until he attempts to mount her, displaying sexual motivation. Cliff is moved away, as he continues to pull in her direction while hyper-salivating. Cliff is returned to kennel. 10/25/24: When off leash at the Care Center Cliff is introduced to a male greeter dog. At the gate Cliff approaches with a soft frame. Cliff scents the greeter male before displacement scenting and seeking out the handler. The greeter male is moved to the back of the pen to make space for Cliff to enter. Once in the pen approaches continuing to displacement scent with a high curved tail. When the two dogs meet face-to-face. Cliff scents with a flagging tail, forward ears and hackles. Cliff begins to lip lick. The two are separated to avoid further stress. The greeter male self-handicaps and Cliff quickly approaches with a stiff frame. When the male turns over Cliff halts and retreats. Cliff again approaches from behind when the greeter male marks or sits and his back is turned. Cliff attempts to mount and growls when doing so. A handler quickly removes Cliff and escorts him out of the pen.
Summary (7):: 11/22/24: Cliff greets the handler standing at his kennel door. The handler tosses a toy in front of Cliffs kennel before leashing. During leashing Cliff attempts to muzzle and paw his away out of the kennel. The handler waits for cliff to get down on all fours before leashing. Cliff is easily leashed but takes no interest in the toy as he passes it, exiting the kennel. Cliff is escorted out of the care center for street walks. When on leash cliff will moderately pull ahead of the handler. The handler tosses another toy for cliff to carry which he ignores. Cliff will sporadically get bursts off arousal, rushing a head on the walk. Cliff is escorted back to the care center, unleashed and secured without any issues. 11/21/24 Cliff is standing neutrally in kennel as the handler approaches. Cliff is leashed with ease and taken for a dog-to-dog interaction. Upon exiting the building, Cliff will mildly leash bite, slightly tugging on the lead but is easily redirected with treats. A drag leash is placed onto Cliff upon arriving in the play yard. (See dog-to-dog located in the Behavior assessment for further details). 11/10/24: Cliff is reported to leash bite on walks while at times, being able to be refocused with a toy but then will begin to mouth staff members clothes/limbs at times as well. 11/04/24 Cliff is lying down as the handler approaches his kennel. The handler will unlocks the kennel door and Cliff will rise, patiently waiting as he is leashed. Upon exiting the kennel, Cliff will attempt to bite the lead but loses focus as he stumbles a bit, appearing dizzy. He will shake off and proceed outside with the handler. Cliff will this time bite the lead gently and tug on it in the direction they are walking. Cliff will get himself aroused and jump on and off the handler then back to biting the lead. The handler will administer Cliff a treat in which he takes moderately, remaining loose and wiggly. Cliff is returned to the facility whereas they get closer to the building, Cliff will bite the leash. Cliff enters the building as well as his kennel with no issue. 10/31: Cliff was observed to dart back and forth between both sides of his kennel when he saw other dogs being walked past his kennel. Cliff is hard barking, growling, and rocking the kennel bank.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- We recommend he is placed in an adult only home at this time.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control- During the handling assessment, Cliff attempted to mount the helper but was easily distracted with treats. Cliff displayed excessive jumping on the handler and began to dig on the handler treat pouch. Consistent training to teach him to sit or stay when greeting people, using positive reinforcement and redirection, will help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Anxiety- Cliff displayed panting behavior and whale eyes during his handling assessment. Managing his anxiety will require creating a calm environment, providing enrichment activities, and using stress-reducing techniques like puzzle toys and regular exercise. Please see handout on generalized anxiety On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration- It was reported that Cliff will hard bark in his kennel pacing lunging toward dogs that pass his kennel.This indicates a need for desensitization and counter-conditioning techniques to help him remain calm and composed in situations where he is separated by barriers. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Leash-biting- Cliff is reported to leash bite on walks.When he starts to bite the leash, distract him with a toy or treat to redirect his attention. Reward him when he stops biting the leash and engages with the toy or focuses on you. Practice loose-leash walking techniques, and consider using a different type of leash or harness that might be less tempting for him to bite. Consistent redirection and reinforcement of desired behaviors will help decrease his leash-biting tendencies. Please see the handout on Leash-biting.
