Animal Profile

Metro

Hello, my name is Metro. My animal id is #248766. I am a male blonde dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 3/2/2026.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Metro is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Metro arrived at the Care Center as a stray with limited history. Upon arrival Metro was social with staff and highly treat motivated. Despite efforts to keep him comfortable, Metro has not acclimated well to the shelter environment. Metro has been observed to be highly kennel reactive, pushing off walls lunging toward occupied kennels. On walks, Metro is also noted to become tense when seeing other dogs. Recently, Metro has also been noted to show a decreasing threshold for arousal, jumping on handlers and fixating on hands. Metro is treat receptive, and has shown the ability to refocus with the use of pattern games such as 'up/down'. During his handling assessment Metro was noted to be social, approach handlers readily and allow all contact. Medically, Metro is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy!

Summary (6):: 03/28/26: Metro is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed while distracted with a treat and exits kennel quickly following another treat tossed further down the hall. Metro pulls hard while walking and fixates on handler, turning around and jumping toward handlers hand with a closed mouth seeking treats. Outside handler has Metro enter a sit and begins playing up down pattern games with him which he is very receptive to. He walks with handler after a bit and continues to pull forward, turning and jumping on handler intermittently. Metro uses the bathroom and walks with handler for a while more before being brought back inside. He returns to kennel following a tossed treat. 3/27/26: Metro is barking exuberantly standing on hind legs when handler approaches kennel. Metro is leashed with ease, when exiting Metro is kept on a very short leash exiting kennel, Metro rears on on hind legs, tense body head towards kennel vocalizing. Metro partially recovers in hallway, becomes more neutral but is panting heavily. Metro does not show interest in pop-up crates as he passes. Metro is walked on the street, he immediately relieves himself (house trained?). Metro pulls hard on street, sees a large dog within 12-15 feet, looks but shows little interest. After some time Metro is walked back to MACC. Again shows no interest in pop-up crates but it pulling hard and panting back to kennel. He enters kennel (a kennel at front of room) without issue. 3/27/26: Metro is reported to be kennel fighting intensely when exiting kennel. He is immediately returned to kennel due to concern of redirection.

Summary (7):: 3/26/26: It is noted on the whiteboard that Metro "pulls very hard". 3/21/26: Metro is at the front of the kennel panting. He is easily leashed and pulls hard out of the room. He pulls towards the passing kennels with a forward posture. He pulls hard downstairs and tries to jump up on passing staff. He is kept away. Metro is then taken out to the street where he continues to run ahead of the handler, pulling hard. He relieves himself and pulls around the block back to the shelter. They stop for a moment and handler engages with Metro with treats. He sits for treats which he takes gently. During this moment, Metro is heavily panting. A dog is observed ahead of him and he stops and stares at the dog before continuing to pull a bit harder after the dog. He is then walked back to the shelter and pulls back upstairs, he is returned to kennel without issue. 3/17/26: A harness is requested for Metro. 3/14: Volunteer Note: Happy, enthusiastic boy, full of wiggles with a bit of jumpiness when excited. Sits nicely for treats. During petting, he can get overexcited, but remains friendly throughout. 3/6/26: Milo is sitting at the front of his kennel with a wagging tail. He is easily leashed and brought out the kennel. As he walks out, Milo pulls hard and looks at the kennels. On the street, Milo walks ahead pulling with moderate to hard leash tension. He occasionally looks back at handler as he pulls. He doesn't react to a dog and show interest in passersby by looking at them with a neutral or soft body and wagging tail. Upon entry, the handler brings Milo inside for his assessment (see notes). Afterwards, as the handler attempts to leash him, Milo btes the drag line and attempts to bite th leash in the handler's han; th assessor calls him over and gives a treat; as Milo eats it, the handler leashes and brings him out the office. Milo sees another dog, but the handler brings him into the room; there, he makes a few attempts to pull towards the kennels, even the once next to him, but the handler shortens the leah and muscles Milo into his kennel with ease.

Date of initial:: 3/3/2026

Summary:: Won't allow head to be touched at all, escalated with even minimal attempts to restrain

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Metro so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No Children (Under 13): Due to Metro's exuberance and capacity for arousal paired with his lack of impulse control we recommend a home with no children. Recommend no Dog Parks: Metro has been observed to become tense when seeing other dogs while in care. Due to protentional for escalation, we recommend no dog parks for Metro Place with a New Hope Partner: Metro has been showing a decreasing threshold for arousal and on-leash reactivity (kennels and on walks). We recommend placement with an experienced New Hope Partner that can carefully manage his triggers

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners/Poor Impulse Control: During his assessment Metro was observed to exuberantly jump on handlers and counter surf. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners and Poor Impulse Control. Social Hyperarousal/Low Threshold for Arousal: During his assessment Metro was observed to behave frantically and with high levels of exuberance and escalated to biting the leash during social interactions with handler. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Metro to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. He should be rewarded with treats when calm. If he escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Metro. Anxiety: During his assessment Metro was observed to stress yawn and whine during the interaction. We recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On-Leash Reactivity/Barrier Frustration: When being returned to kennel handlers report Metro will pull towards dogs with moderate intensity and fixates on them as he passes them. Metro may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On-Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: During his assessment Metro was observed to bite the leash, he was able to be redirected by handlers using treats. We recommend walking him with a toy to dissuade him from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach him to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
