Animal Profile

Ichabod

Hello, my name is Ichabod. My animal id is #79145. I am a desexed male gray dog at the . The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 10/18/2019.

Reserved

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Ichabod is at risk due to behavior due to his mouthiness, leash biting and poor bite inhibition. At this point he poses a bite risk in the care center due to his arousal levels, and we feel he will be more successful in an adult only home outside of the care center. Medically he does have allergies and conjunctivitis but is otherwise healthy.

You may know me from such films as...

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A volunteer writes: What isn't there to delight in with Ichabod? He is jaw-droppingly handsome; a perfect specimen of strength and beauty. With other dogs, he is not smooth socially, but fate's ledger granted him a deeply perceptive brain to help out. He can look for an opportunity for mischief, but also really enjoys learning, and dives right in with a handler who wants to give that brain a job. Ichabod demonstrated a knowledge of "sit", so to keep him focused, I showed him "watch me". (And that was when I learned he is a touch crosseyed, which gives him an endearing softness). Later on that day, Ichabod was with his favorite volunteer in another pen, but ran over to greet me when I approached the fence. Loyal, smart, handsome as heck, and active. If those are your must-haves on the list, your dream dog might be Ichabod, and he's waiting for you, at Manhattan's ACC.

Summary:: Wags tail, seeks attention, soft body

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Ichabod so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: While Ichabod presents to be a challenge in the Care Center with his rope reactivity (grabbing the leash in his mouth and biting up the leash), he remains highly social when interacting with his handlers. Ichabod is playful, exuberant and actively seeks/solicits attention. He has been working with handlers on his kennel presence (not jumping up on the kennel doors and holding the 'sit' cue), and well as learning 'down' and 'crawl'.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the level of jumping and mouthing displayed at the care center, we recommend an adult only home.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Ichabod jumps up often on handlers in a social manner, seeking attention. See handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Ichabod has displayed some mouthiness with handlers at the care center, applying moderate pressure. See handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Leash-biting: When excited, Ichabod grabs the leash in his mouth and it is sometimes difficult to get him to relinquish it. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
