Animal Profile

Brownie

Hello, my name is Brownie. My animal id is #227574. I am a desexed male brown brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 6/1/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person health - medical.

Brownie is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Brownie is showing significant signs of deterioration in kennel. He is observed to be pacing at the front of his kennel with dilated pupils, is heavily panting, and will jump up very high, almost touching the roof of his kennel and cage fighting. Earlier in his stay at the Care Centers, Brownie is observed to lunge, hard bark, and actively bite the crate bars to try and get to a dog walking past. With staff and volunteers, Brownie is highly social and solicits petting while gently taking treats. His previous owner has reported that he loves playing fetch, loves belly rubs and treats. Medically, Brownie is apparently healthy.

I am playful and cute! Not only do I pull at heart strings, but I also pull on leash! I will need someone to help me with my leash manners. My #BoroughBreak Buddy Writes: Brownie is an EXCELLENT walker. He was a bit excited when handed off to me at ACC but after that he walked with a loose leash like a champ. We covered a total of 6 miles (with many breaks - Brownie rested patiently and calmly on the grass or by a bench) over the day, and the only time he really pulled on the leash was when he saw a squirrel. He also pulled a little when we passed another dog, but was respectful and kept walking after "saying hi from afar". A few times while we were walking in the street and a big cart went past us on the sidewalk, Brownie stopped and didn't want to continue on. I think he was scared, so I gave him a big hug and gently coaxed him to keep going, and he was trotting on in no time. He's such a charismatic fellow that four different people stopped us to comment on his beautiful coat and big smile. He is great in cars - he hopped into the Uber, lay down on the floor, and rode calmly the whole way. When we got to my apartment he got excited and jumped up, but I told him to "sit" and he immediately complied. He is a good boy and does not jump onto furniture. He took a nap on the floor at my feet. Brownie is a big sweetie and loves pets, hugs and cuddles anytime. Anyone would be lucky to have a friend like Brownie, he will be a loyal and loving companion who is up for just about anything. I'm rooting for this lovebug.

Summary (4):: 8/24/25- Brownie is jumping up on the sides of his kennel and barking with dilated eyes when handler approaches his kennel. He stops jumping when handler goes to leash and he is looking at the side of one kennel wall. When he exits he tries to cage fight and handler muscles him out of the room. He is taken for a street walk. He walks on a loose leash with an occasionally mild pull towards spots to sniff. He is social with handler and gently takes treats. As Brownie walked further from the building, he started to baulk. Handler softly spoke to him and he slowly approached them with a neutral body and pinned ears. Handler started to walk and again Brownie baulked, handler presented treats and Brownie came to handler. They had to continuously give treats to motivate Brownie to walk. He started to pick up pace and handler would reward for the further he walked. He crossed the street and was walking to the park. He again baulked and wouldn't go forward. Handler decided to head back to the building, Brownie followed handler without stopping. Handler scratched his neck as they were walking back. He was easily clipped and when returning to kennel he again tried to cage fight. When we was at his kennel door, he planted and handler tossed treats in. Brownie went into his kennel without further issues.

Summary (5):: 08/23/25: ACS reports Brownie is kennel fighting upon exiting kennel. 8/21/25: During quiet time, handler walks into the room to check on Brownie. He is observed to be pacing at the front of his kennel with dilated pupils, is heavily panting, and will jump up very high, almost touching the roof of his kennel, while taking turns facing his neighbors. Treats are offered, he sniffs briefly, but does not consume and continues pacing, panting, and jumping. 8/20/25: It was reported by a volunteer that Brownie is displaying some high level of stress in his kennel due to his neighbors. The behavior was described as him trying to cage fight while jumping up and down very high. 8/20/25: Brownie is reported to be afraid to go on a street walk. 8/18/25: It is reported that Brownie was lethargic in kennel and refused to walk. 8/17/25 (Trainer Note): Brownie is standing at the front of his kennel with a neutral body and soft eyes as handler approaches. He is easily leashed with treats; a treat trial is tossed on the floor which he readily follows out the room. He is taken for a brief relief walk before his training session. Brownie continuously pauses on his walk, retreating backwards, and refusing to walk. He chases after treats tossed but does not walk unprompted. Handler decides to return him to care centers as he is very adamant of baulking. In the interaction room he is a bit aloof and distracted at first, sniffing around his surroundings. Handler introduces "Look at That" training protocol: neutral object is shown to Brownie; a clicker paired with a treat is used as a reward any time he disengages/has no reaction towards the object. He is engaged and receptive for the most part. He is returned to his kennel without issue. 8/15/25: Brownie is reported to be highly stressed being next to Thor Blues in kennel. A possible switch was requested. 8/9/25:Brownie is at the front of the kennel barking, handler easily leashes him and he is taken out of the kennel. Brownie makes attempts to pull towards kennels but does not react further. He is taken down stairs to the street. On the street a leash is clipped to his harness and he walks beside the handler with a loose leash. Brownie will occasionally stop walking and stare at the handler. A treat is used to encourage him to walk, he take them gently. Handler walks him around the block and he continues to stop regularly. Handler unclips their leash to his harness and removes his harness. Brownie walks better on the street with the handler. He then stops and refuses to walk more. Handler then walks him back to the shelter. He stares at dogs that pass nearby but does not react to them. Brownie is then walked back into the building and is returned to kennel without issue.

Brownie makes attempts to pull towards kennels but does not react further. He is taken down stairs to the street. On the street a leash is clipp 8/4/25: I had Brownie out for an interaction with clients in the PAC interaction room. It was a father and his 11-year old son who was sitting quietly on the bench. The clients were sitting on the bench and were not engaging with Brownie due to him visibly being nervous. Brownie had a tense face, his ears were pulled back and he was hesitant to approach client even with treats offered. He did take the treats gently and backed away to eat them in his space. We gave him a few minutes to sniff around the room but Brownie was very hesitant to go near clients and would hard stare and began softly growling at them. I called his name and offered him a treat when he sat but then he continued hard staring at the client and huffed. Since the dog was uncomfortable, I ended the interaction and walked him back to the kennel. He went inside without an issue. He seemed to be more comfortable with me and would accept pets and treats from me but not for the client even though this was the first time I was meeting him as well. 8/3/25: It was written on the whiteboard "barked and lunged at a volunteer who was opening PAC door for us to come out" 8/1/25: Brownie is sitting at the front of the kennel with neutral body. Brownie slowly came over and handler made a cup with their hands and held up water. Brownie lapped at it and handler gave him some more treats. Handler put a little more water on Brownie's back, he didn't back away. Handler went to sit on the bench and Brownie followed them. They offered another treat and he just sniffed it. Handler clipped their leash to his harness and they tossed him some treats into his pop up crate, he easily went in and he allowed handler to unclip their leash from his harness without issue. 6/4/25: Brownie is at the front of the kennel with a soft body. He is easily leashed and pulls hard towards the outside. Brownie is taken to the street where he walks with a loose leash. Summary:: Allowed handling

Date of initial:: 6/3/2025

Summary:: Tense body for exam

ENERGY LEVEL:: Brownie is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Brownie.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 5): Due to on leash reactivity and fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Brownie's previous owner states that he will have accidents very rarely in the home. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. Please see handout on House Soiling. Basic Manners: Brownie's previous owner states that he will jump up often or non stop. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful Defensive: Brownie's previous owner states that he becomes fearful when startled. During an adoption interaction Brownie was observed to hard stare with pinned back ears, a tense face, and began to growl towards the unfamiliar people. It is important to move slowly with Brownie, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Brownie's previous owner states that he will run towards small animals and dogs while on leash. During his stay in the care center Brownie has been observed to bark and lunge towards a person holding the door open. Brownie will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Pulling: Brownie's previous owner states that he pulls hard on leash. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage, and that they be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
