Pinky
Hello, my name is Pinky. My animal id is #263899. I am a desexed female tan dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 8/30/2026.
Pinky is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Pinky has shown significant kennel stress and high arousal, including incessant barking, bouncing off the sides of her crate, lunging at the kennel door, heavy panting, and excessive salivation. She has also displayed kennel fighting and lunging toward other dogs. Pinky continues to struggle to settle in the kennel environment, but is always excited to go out for walks and spend time in the play yards. Medically, Pinky is apparently healthy.

Pinky is a bouncy, wiggly girl with a whole lot of personality packed into one adorable package! Found as a stray, she was eager to say hello during her assessment and readily approached her handlers, although she had a hard time settling down and was ready to keep the party going. She's got plenty of pep in her step and may just be the perfect little Pinky for someone looking for an active companion! My Ideal Home Pinky would love an active home that can give her plenty of exercise, enrichment, and positive training. Long walks, fun activities, and puzzle toys can help keep her busy while she works on her impulse control. With the right guidance, this energetic girl can turn all that excitement into some pretty pink-tastic progress! Good with Other Pets? Pinky's history with other animals is unknown. Any future introductions should be slow, careful, and managed by her new family once she's had time to settle in. Good with Kids? Pinky would do best in a home without young children under 5. She was persistently jumping on handlers during her assessment, so older children who can give her space and follow guidance may be a better fit. Things to Know Pinky has lots of enthusiasm and is still learning that she doesn't need to jump up to get attention. Her new family should use force-free, reward-based training to reinforce behaviors like sit, stay, down, and leave it. She'll need plenty of exercise and enrichment to help her channel all that energy, and with some patience and consistency, this Pinky could be pretty in pink and ready to shine!

Summary:: Pinky arrived at the care centers as a stray, so her behavior with other dogs is unknown. 9/18/26: Pinky greets a novel male dog through a barrier and is loose/wiggly, and whines at the gate while pawing at it. The male dog has a medical condition that prevents him to greet Pinky. Another greet will be done for Pinky to get a more accurate read on her behavior with other dogs.

She is barking incessantly as people passing and seems to be losing her voice from barking so much. 10/8/26: Pinky is jumping, barking, and heavy panting at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She then pulls hard while heavy panting on the way to the yard for play group. In the yard, she greets the other dog at the gate with loose body while still heavy panting and whimpering. She continues to heavy pant when the gate is opened and would snap towards the other dog. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. She does not settle and will press her face against the top corner of the crate while standing on her back legs, barking rapidly. 9/23: ACS staff report that Pinky is hard barking and lunging at other dogs in the room during cleaning/walks. She was also noted to attempt to kennel fight with the dog directly across from her. 9/20/26: Pinky has a loose and wiggly body in her crate as handler approaches. Summary:: Friendly, soliciting attention, jumping up / excitable, food motivated
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the high level of jumping and anxiety seen at the care center, we recommend an adult only home or a home with older, dog savvy children.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Separation anxiety,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control | Anxiety: Pinky persistently jumped on handlers throughout her assessment. She also jumped to grab the handler's treat pouch. She had difficulty settling and focusing. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. If her anxiety manifests in a future home, we recommend long walks and a variety of enrichment items to help keep her engaged. Please see handout on basic manners/poor impulse control and generalized anxiety. Separation anxiety: During her trial adoption, Pinky displayed separation anxiety when left alone. We do not know the nature or intensity of this behavior, but we recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. Please see handout on Separation Anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Pinky was observed to be attempting to kennel fight as she was taken out of her crate for her assessment, a behavior that is likely due to frustration. She may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
