Animal Profile

Prince

Hello, my name is Prince. My animal id is #242052. I am a desexed male tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 12 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/23/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- cannot afford to care for.

Prince is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. Prince is a senior cat with comorbidities. He was diagnosed with a heart murmur, periodontal disease, otitis, and cystomatosis at intake. More recently, he has been diagnosed with a URI and has had a poor appetite that hasn't responded significantly to supportive care. Prince will need ongoing treatment until his URI has resolved and his appetite has improved, he will also need follow up veterinary care for his other medical issues. Behaviorally, Prince is fearful, but has tolerated medical handling.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/03/25 FB61 Lying in litterbox, body and face tense with his head towards the back wall. Prince tolerates all petting today while squinting his eyes and turning towards the scratcher with a tense expression. He does not escalate further and he does not engage with the enrichment offered today. Needs more time. 12/10/25 FB06 Not spending to much time with Prince today, he is UTW, nose is very congested. I approach with my hand and he has no reaction. I pet him a few times on his head as his ears turn outward, his face and eyes are neutral. 12/15/25 FB06 Prince was crouched down low in his litterbox, head low as if trying to stay out of view. His face and eyes are neutral and ears are forward. Slowly approaching with my hand, Prince tolerates head and back pets while remaining in a crouched position with head low. 12/20/25 FB79 So handsome so shy boy; inside of his litter he has his head low not wanting to look up at me. Prince allows me to pet on his head and back with no reaction. I placed a tray of treats for him which he enjoyed right away and allowed more petting on his head.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyer due to fearfulness.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children

Recommendations comments:: No young children under 13 due to Prince's fearfulness. Older respectful children only. Counselor discretion.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: As the kennel door is opened, Prince is crouched down at the back of the kennel with forward ears and a neutral face. As the assessor slowly offers their gloved hand, he leans forward and sniffs but then flinches away with squinted eyes. When offered an ungloved hand, he turns his head away and faces the wall. As he is looking away the assessor attempts petting him with the scratcher. He tolerates the petting from his head to his tail as he cowers his head down as low as he can and pushes it into the corner of the kennel. No pick up was attempted at this time. Prince tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, he may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
