Jovie
Hello, my name is Jovie. My animal id is #243522. I am a male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/12/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormJovie is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Jovie has been struggling to acclimate to the care center, frequently pancaking, refusing to enter his kennel, and requiring assistance or lifting with a belly band. While he can be loose, social, and playful in office spaces, engaging in play, gentle mouthing, and accepting treats he becomes tense and begins to escalate during kennel return, escalating to vocalizing and snapping toward handlers hands when the door is closed as he tries to run out of his kennel. Medically, Jovie has severe dermatitis.

Medically, Jovie has severe dermatitis. Jovie was surrendered as a stray, so his past behavior in a home environment is unknown. He was loose and wiggly during his intake but was fearful during his intake. Jovie has show bouts of some sociability when moving slowly with high value treats. However, he is reluctant to return to his kennel, pancaking when he sees that he is going back, occasionally needing multiple handlers to use a sling to escort him into kennel. Due to the concerns displayed in care, we recommend that Jovie to be placed in an adult-only home through a New Hope Partner that can address his challenges with the use of a professional certified trainer that uses only positive reinforcement methods.

Summary (7):: 12/18/25: Jovie is at the front of his kennel whining when the handler approaches, is easily leashed and walked to the behavior office where he is loose/wiggly, allows to be clipped to his collar and explores the room. Jovie will go between leaning in for petting, taking snacks from a snuffle mat in the middle of the room and laying down. Jovie will begin to play with another staff member, bowing towards them, mouthing them with very mild pressure and leaning in for petting. Jovie is walked out of the room with a belly band and his kennel is not cleaned, so he it taken back to the room for a little longer. Jovie is belly banded again and begins to walk toward the hallway and sits in the room, he is baby talked and begins to walk out into the hallway and into the kennel room but puts his weight down. Jovie is lifted with the belly band and is put into kennel, as the handler closes the door he begins to try and push out of kennel, the handler stiff arms him as they close the door and Jovie will vocalize and snap towards the handlers hand as they close the door. Jovie is given a minute before the handler takes his leash off. 12/14/25 Jovie is at the front of his kennel with a soft wagging tail and neutral body. He is easily leashed as he walks into the loop pf the leash, proceeding to the live room. He walks over at a relaxed paced, maintaining a neutral frame. They enter the live room and he spends most his time exploring. He will relieve himself as he urinates and proceeds to explore, collecting treats from the ground as well. He takes treats gently when administered. During his time in the live room he will glance often at the leash. When returned to kennel, he is reluctant to enter. A large toy catches his attention but when tossed in the kennel, he doesn't go after it. Directional leash pressure is used to get him in to kennel and once half his body is inside, he will commence forward willingly. 12/13/25: A medical staff member asks for help to get Jovie back into kennel as he is pancaked outside of the kennel room. Jovie is belly banded and has to be helped into the kennel room before he enters kennel. A staff member who went to help tried to muzzle and pick up Jovie, but tenses quickly and not attempted.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Jovie's fearfulness and being uncomfortable with novel stimuli, we recommend for him to be placed in an adult only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Jovie has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Jovie has been fearful and reluctant to return to his kennel during his stay in care. He sometimes needs multiple handlers to assist with getting him back to his kennel and will occasionally try to escape once inside. It is important to always go slow and give Jovie the option to walk away from any social interaction. He should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Jovie’s choice to approach a new person or thing. He would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period.
