Summary (6):: 8/20/25: Mucho Grande is laying down in his bed when the handler approaches. He lifts his head and allows the handler to leash and lead him out of the kennel. Mucho Grande is taken to the street for a walk where he relieve himself a few times. During the walk Mucho Grande would flinch with a tense body at loud noises and sudden movements. A member of the public began running past mucho grande and caused him to tuck his tail and begin shaking. The handler kneels down to comfort mucho grande and he leans into their body. Mucho Grande is then taken back inside and immediately goes into his bed.

They are able to lasso the leash onto him, he readily comes out when his door is fully opened. He is taken for a street walk. He walks on a loose leash and has no reaction to any stimuli. He sniffs around and relieves himself in multiple spots. He is aloof with handler. He is taken for his assessment where he remains aloof, when collaring he has a slight tense body but allows them to collar him. He explores the room and jumps on the couch sniffing around, then lays down. He is easily releashed and allows handler to pick him up. He is returned to his kennel without issue. 8/13/25: Mucho Grande is lying down in kennel upon approach. Handler unlocks the kennel and Mucho stands up with a neutral body. Handler presents the leash and sticks it into the kennel. Mucho backs up and presses against the back of the kennel. Handler has to drape the leash over his head slowly. It gets over his head and under his leg. He then walks into the second part of his kennel. Handler applies some leash tension and he comes back over. Handler slowly loosens the leash with their hand. Mucho does not react to the brief touch. The leash comes off and Mucho moves to the other side where he presses to the back of the kennel. Handler lassos him slowly and Mucho walks out of the kennel to the backyard. He walks slowly next to the handler and does a brief dog-dog interaction. He is walked around the backyard sniffing the ground throughout the walk. Handler bends down and pre-clips his leash slowly and without issue. Mucho Grande is walked back into the shelter and returned to kennel without issue. 08/07/25: Mucho Grande is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He shies away from the leash but eventually allows handler to place it over his head, he then exits kennel and walks with handler to the street. Mucho passes people without issue but will flinch and spin around on leash quickly when hearing sudden or loud noises. He walks with handler for a while and stops frequently to sniff spots on the street as well as use the bathroom while outside. Mucho does not accept treats throughout his interation, after walking for a while he is brought back to the care centers where he is assessed, once finished he is brought back to kennel. Based on Muchos fearful and flighty behavior his leash is not clipped, a hook is used to retrieve the leash after returning Mucho to kennel which he initially avoids before allowing handler to remove the leash.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Mucho Grande so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: During intake Mucho was observed to escalate to growling, snarling, snapping, head whipping and alligator rolling. During his assessment he was observed to growl when approached by the handler. It is important to move slowly with Mucho, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Mucho's finder states that he will hard bark continually towards people that approach. Mucho will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other people. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
