Animal Profile

Breezy

Hello, my name is Breezy. My animal id is #233241. I am a male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 7/29/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Breezy is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. These concerns have been in his previous home as well as in the care center. Breezy in the care center is intensely fearful despite best efforts to keep him comfortable, avoiding interaction with staff when outside and persistently scanning his environment. Breezy does have a bite history in the previous home, biting the previous owners leg leaving a scratch and breaking skin. Medically, Breezy is apparently healthy.

In the care center, Breezy has shown signs of fearfulness in the kennel, including freezing, pressing against the wall, and reluctance to exit. With patient handling, he has begun to tolerate leashing and walk calmly outdoors. While initially hyper-vigilant, he gradually loosens up in quiet settings, takes treats softly, and explores his environment. Breezy startles at loud noises and remains sensitive to his surroundings but has shown small improvements in comfort with time and consistency. Breezy is available for rescue through one of our new hope partners.

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray(Limited History)

Bite history:: Breezy is noted to have bitten and released his owner leg and made a small scratch, breaking the skin. When the police had entered the apartment, the residents had locked the dog in the bathroom to keep him from biting anyone else. The owner was able to provide self-care for his wounds at home.

Date of assessment:: 8/2/2025

Summary:: Due to Breezy high level of fearfulness, a handling assessment will not be conducted at this time.

Summary:: 08/08/25 Due to entering the facility as a DOH hold and becoming under the weather when the hold was lifted,

Summary (6):: 8/19/25: Breezy's behavior in care remains the same as noted 8/12. 08/12/25 Breezy is jumping onto his kennel door with a loose frame while panting. The handler leashes Breezy with ease, taking him outside to the play yard. Breezy trots alongside the handler with a moderate pace entering the pen with no issue. Breezy explores the pen, marking around the pen as well as relieving himself. Breezy will fixate on dogs walking by with novel handlers, becoming aroused as he heavily pants and pulls in the direction where they're walking. Breezy is returned to the facility with no issue, entering the building and kennel with no issue. 8/09/25: Breezy is observed to be growling and hard barking at the handler when approaches with hackles raised. Breezy is not directly greeted due to the intensity of his barking, and tossed a couple treat which he sniffs but does not eat.

Summary (7):: 08/01/25: (AM) when the handler approaches, Breezy is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose frame. Breezy is easily leashed and escorted to the play yards. When in the yards Sleep will spend his time cautiously exploring the yard, scanning his surroundings, it is not until some time till he feels comfortable to lowering his head to scent the yard. After relieving himself, Breezy is escorted back to his kennel where he is safely secured. 7/31/25: (PM) Breezy was curled up resting in middle of kennel as handler approached. Handler opened kennel and crouched in doorway for a couple of minutes, talking to him in a soft voice. He did not eat freeze-dried liver treats tossed within reach. When handler stood up and prepared to leash him he came to front of kennel. He took a step back but otherwise tolerated having slip leash placed over head. He readily exited kennel and walked outside. It was raining heavily so handler walked him around the covered area by the entrance. He relieved himself while outside. When handler sat on ledge he jumped up with his front paws and observed the street with a neutral body. On the way back inside he was startled by the sound of dogs barking. Handler crouched down and clipped leash to a figure 8. Breezy hesitated to enter kennel room, however there were three other staff present at the time. Handler used directional leash pressure to guide him into kennel. He jumped up on front of kennel with a neutral body while handler was standing there. 07/31/25 Breezy is lying down in the back of his kennel as the handler approaches. As the handler attempts to coax him with high value treats, he proceeds further back into kennel, pressing his body up against the wall. The handler will attempt to coax him forward with a soft voice but Breezy, with a tucked tail, remains pressed against the wall, appearing fearful. The handler will widen the loop of their lead wide and lightly guide it onto Breezy . As the lead falls onto Breezy, he displays reluctance in coming out of kennel, so the handler waits patiently. Breezy slowly exits the kennel, hyper-vigilant as he scans his surroundings with a tucked tail. He is taken into the training room where he is kept on leash. Breezy enters the room with a more relaxed frame and tail, exploring the room. He gradually becomes looser in frame, taking high value treats when administered with a soft mouth. Breezy will continue to explore the room and collect high value treats when administered. He is returned after some time back to kennel, entering his kennel with no issue. 07/30/25 Due to high levels of FAS and reluctancy to exit the kennel, Breezy is left alone to decompress.
