Animal Profile

Tweety

Hello, my name is Tweety. My animal id is #248964. I am a desexed female tabby cat at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/24/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Tweety is at risk due to ongoing behavior reasons. When she first arrived at the Care Center, she was growling, hissing, lunging and swatting out of the kennel at staff. These behaviors caused the neighboring cats in the room to become highly stressed. She was started on medication to help with shelter stress and her behaviors subsided. Recently, she has stopped taking her medication and her behaviors have begun to slowly escalate. Tweety continuously growls as staff are in the room and attempts to swat them when they are cleaning neighboring kennels. She was surrendered due to behavior in the home, having a multiple-bite history. It is recommended that she be placed into a stable home environment with experienced adopters who are willing to work slowly with her. Medically, she appears healthy.

She likes to do things on her own terms and would do best in a home that respects her space. Tweety has not acclimated to the Care Center and is looking for a patient home that will allow her the time and space she needs to adjust. She has some behavior challenges, and staff will go through them in detail with you upon inquiry.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 3/26 Tweety is at the front of her kennel, watching with extremely dilated pupils and growling while staff member is cleaning other kennels. Staff tosses a few treats in each side of her kennel through the door bars, sprays Feliway in the room, and leaves the room for a minute. Upon return, Tweety has moved from the litter box side to the den side, growling slightly less, and staff is able to close the portal and clean the litter box and linens. Staff sprays more Feliway and adds a lot of treats and a bowl with tuna squeeze up, then opens the portal. She comes through after a few seconds, hisses when she sees staff member, and then begins eating the squeeze up. Staff is then able to clean the other side to a limited extent (unable to close the portal from that side) as Tweety focuses on the squeeze up and treats. Tweety continues to growl intermittently while staff cleans, escalating to hissing when staff is locking up after finishing. Staff leaves her with more squeeze up and treats. 4/3 Tweety is vocalizing softly when staff enters the room. Her eyes are moderately dilated and she is lounging in the middle of the litter box side of her kennel. Staff opens the door and she looks up, growling and purring simultaneously. Staff offers a bowl of tuna squeeze up and she gets up and immediately begins licking it while staff cleans the other side of her kennel. After they finish that side, they offer her another bowl of squeeze up, and she purrs as she comes forward, rubbing slightly on staff's hand before eating the squeeze up. Staff closes the portal and cleans the other side. After Tweety finishes the squeeze up, she begins trying to open the portal, meowing as she does. Staff opens the portal and puts a handful of treats on the linens for her; she rubs on their hand again and begins eating the treats after looking around for more squeeze up. 4/5 Tweety begins meowing frequently as staff enters the room and cleans other kennels. Staff opens her kennel and she approaches with neutral body language. Staff offers her a squeeze up which she eats from the tube as staff neatens up her kennel. Staff opens the other side of her kennel and reaches past her to get her dirty litter box while she continues eating squeeze up. After replacing the box, staff pets her lightly on her neck and shoulders while she finishes her squeeze up. She tries to follow the empty tube as staff removes it, but allows them to close her door to keep her from jumping out. She resumes meowing as staff finishes cleaning tasks in the room. ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Talkative

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Tweety has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. Bite History: Tweety previously bit/scratched a person. The incident resulted in broken skin. The incidents occurred when a person sat or walked in her way and when she is scared. Escape Artist: Some cats are highly motivated to slip outdoors due to enticing smells, boredom, or natural urges to explore and hunt. Door-darting can be risky, as indoor cats face serious dangers outside, including getting lost, injured, or sick. This behavior is often fueled by lack of indoor enrichment or unaltered cats seeking mates. Meeting your cat’s physical and mental needs indoors and using consistent door-management strategies can help reduce escape attempts. Please see handout on Escape Artist.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Tweety is laying at the front of her kennel with wide, dilated pupils. As the handler approaches, Tweety is yowling loudly. She swats out at the handler as they stand in front of her kennel. As they give her slow blinks, she continues to yowl. A scratcher tool with squeeze up is offered out to her and she swats, smacking it. They let the scratcher tool sit there and she begins to lick the squeeze up. As she licks the treat, she is still yowling. When the handler attempts to pet her, she begins to swat and her yowls get louder. Tweety is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has been lunging, swatting, hissing, yowling and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. She has a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed.
