Phynx
Hello, my name is Phynx. My animal id is #238422. I am a desexed female black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/22/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormPhynx is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Phynx arrived at the Care Center as an own surrender. Her previous owner noted that Phynx is sweet, social, playful, and also crate trained. Despite efforts to keep Phynx comfortable, she has been showing concerning levels of reactivity. When being taken for walks, Phynx has been persistently trying to kennel fight and pull hard toward occupied pop-up crates. She has also shown on-leash reactivity on the street, pulling towards dogs, tense body, and is difficult to redirect. Phynx has been social with select staff, allowing petting and treat motivated. Medically, Phynx is being treated for unspecified dermatitis and CIRDC.

I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. A Volunteer Wrote: We have a circus girl in the house! As one staff member who knows her says, "This one's a good doggy," but what we couldn't anticipate is all the tricks she has ready to show off: sit, paw, other paw, standing on her back legs on command...wowza! She's lived in a home with kids, and her former owner describes her as "playful and friendly" with strangers and other dogs. We second and third that-Phynx is amazing across the board.

Summary (6):: 11/23/25: Phynx is reported to pull hard on leash. A harness was requested. 11/22/25: Phynx is laying in her kennel upon approach. She stands with neutral body and is easily leashed. She pulls towards the pop up crate but handler calls her away and give her a treat. She will sit for treats and take gently from handlers hand. She is walked on the street where she pulls hard forward, not stopping to sniff around. She comes to handler when called and allows petting but moves away when petting stops. She returns to kennel without issue. 11/16/25: Phynx is at the front of her kennel with a neutral body upon approach. She is then easily leashed and removed from kennel, where she would then begin to intensely kennel fight as she passes the neighboring kennels. Once she reaches the first kennel, she would begin to bare teeth and is kept on a short and tight leash. While walking down the hallway, she would watch the dogs in the crates with a tense body and raised hackles. Shortly after, she is then taken for a street walk where she would become neutral bodied and have a mild pull ahead of her. She would pull towards different spots to relieve herself and then solicit pets from the handler. She would continue the walk without reacting towards passing stimuli and would easily be returned to her kennel shortly afterwards.
Summary (7):: 11/9/25- Phynx is at the front of her kennel jumping up on the door as handler approaches, they use a treat lure and she is easily leashed. When exiting the room she attempts to cage fight and pulls towards the passing pop up crates. She is taken for a street walk. Phynx has a moderate pull and does check ins with handler. She gently takes treats and is social with them. She is taken to the park and she sniffs around. When she sees other dogs pulls towards them with a stiff body with a high tail. Handler presents a treat and she follows them, she automatically sits and is rewarded. She allows handler to scratch her head, neck and back. When returning to the building she starts to pull harder up to her room. She is easily clipped and again attempts to cage fight when returning to her kennel. She readily goes in without further issue. 11/2/25- Phynx is jumping up on her kennel door with a neutral body as handler attempted to leash, they used a treat lure and she was easily leashed. As she exits her kennel she tries to cage fight. Once outside of the room she pulls back to the room, handler presents treats and she follows them. She is taken for a street walk, when exiting to the sidewalk she sees another dog and becomes tense. She just stares with a high tail and handler presents a treat and she follows them. She has a mild to moderate pull at times sniffing around. She is social with handler and takes treats with mild pressure. She allows handler to to scratch her head, neck and back, she leans into handler's legs when they scratch her side. She has no reaction to any stimuli. When returning to the building she starts to pull harder and handler uses treats to make sure stop and sit. She is easily clipped and again tries to cage fight when returning her to her kennel. Handler tosses in treats and she readily goes in without further issue. 10/23/25: Phynx is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches, she accepts treats from handler and jumps at the kennel bars before being leashed while distracted and exiting kennel pulling hard out to the street. Once outside she continues to pull hard and pulls in the direction of people and dogs passing on the street. She rarely stops to sniff and is difficult to redirect, after walking for a while she is brought back inside and walks with handler back into the shelter for her assessment. Once complete she is brought back to kennel and baulks but is muscled into kennel without further issue.
Date of intake:: 10/22/2025
Summary:: Allowed all handling, relaxed
ENERGY LEVEL:: Phynx is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Phynx.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity we recommend an adult only home. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to lunging towards dogs while on leash we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Phynx's previous owner states that she will jump up often. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful: During her assessment Phynx was observed to seek exit throughout the interaction. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Phynx would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity: Phynx's previous owner states that she will lunge towards dogs and people. During her stay in the care center Phynx is obsvered to pull hard towards dogs and people with a tense body. With in the kennel room Phynx is obsvered to pull hard, lunge and bare teeth towards the other dogs in the kennel room. Phynx will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Pulling: Phynx's previous owner states that she pulls hard while on leash. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage, and that they be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
