Hubble
Hello, my name is Hubble. My animal id is #218140. I am a desexed male chestnut dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 3 months 4 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 1/7/2025.
Hubble is on the At Risk list for medical reasons. He has episodes in which he has difficulty breathing. They may be exacerbated by stress, heat and humidity. These are not a "reverse sneezing" events. Preliminary tests suggest a narrowed trachea, but more diagnostic tests, like a bronchoscopy study of his upper airway, need to be done. Behaviorally, Hubble has been slightly fearful while in care - but warms up with a slow approach.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you.

Summary:: 2/25/25: Hubble greets another dog at the gate methodically barking and kicking his legs back.
Summary (4):: 5/6/25 - Hubble is laying on his kerunda bed when handler approaches kennel. He hops off the bed and stands near the door as the door is unlocked and he is easily leashed. Once out of kennel, he is clipped to his harness and lead outside. He pulls mildly, but is redirected with leash pressure and vocal cues. He relieves himself outside. While he is standing in the driveway, the handler can audibly hear Hubble gasping occasionally. He is led to the street - he flinches hard when the gate closes behind him. He relieves himself again. Treats are offered, but he doesn't take them from the handler's hand - sniffing and eating some treats off of the sidewalk instead. He looks back at handlers occasionally with wide eyes - but continues to walk forward, engaging in his environment. A MOP walks by - Hubble looks over at the person, but does not react. At the end of the block, there is a dog tied up on the sidewalk. Hubble notices the dog but does not react. He is then walked back to the shelter - sniffing the environment and marking occasionally. He is then lead back into the shelter and placed in his kennel without incident. 5/5/25- Hubble is at the front of his kennel with a loose and wiggly body, he is easily leashed. When after exiting the room Hubble starts wheezing/ gasping for air. Handler clips their leash to his harness and waits till Hubble isn't gasping as much to continue his walk. He is taken for a street where he moderately pulls to various spots to sniff. Handler has him sit when people pass and presents a treat, Hubble keeps his focus on handler with a soft body. He gently takes treats from their hand and allows handler to pet his neck and back. He starts to bit on the leash, handler tosses treats which redirect him and he goes to eat them. He follows the command to sit and is rewarded. When returning to the building Hubble starts again to leash bit. Handler tosses treats which momentarily makes him stop then he goes back to biting at the leash. He starts to get out of breath and stops biting at the leash, again trying to catch his breath. When a MOP is passing Hubble has a slight pull towards them. Handler shortens leash and tosses treats ahead which Hubble follows. When returning in the hallway, Hubble again is gasping for breath and is wobbly. Handler stops for a moment and rubs Hubble's back. He then pulls to keep going forward and is wobbly walking to his kennel. He allows handler to unclip their leash from his harness without issue.
Summary (5):: 5/3/25: IT is reported by staff that Hubble will leash bite and bark at strangers on the street on AM walks. 4/27/25: Hubble is at the front of kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. He is easily leashed, removed from kennel, taken to the yard, and put on a drag leash. He maintains a neutral body throughout interaction but becomes more soft and wiggly when handler uses baby voice and scratches the side of his torso. He bounces around the pen and approaches handler with a sideways and very wiggly body, and heavily leans into handlers hand for pets. He is not interested in engaging with the 'scent work' game handler brought out, and handler continues petting and tossing treats. He is leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 4/15/25: Hubble is at the front of kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. He is easily leashed and removed from kennel. He pulls very hard out of the room onto the street. Handler cues for a 'sit' and Hubble is receptive and rewarded. Hubble continues pulling very hard on his walk, to the point of choking himself. Handler begins BAT training, and will pause when leash pressure is felt. Hubble, without being prompted, would turn towards handler and a both a reward and reward marker were used. At one point, handler took a couple extra seconds retrieving the treat from treat pouch, Hubble began to jump on handler intensely, push off of them, and began to leash bite intensely. He was redirected with a treat toss onto his face. This only occurred once more, similarly enough when the treats were not dispensed to Hubble fast enough. Out of frustration, he begins to leash bite. He is returned to his kennel without issue.
Summary (6):: 4/9/25: It is reported on the behavior board that while being walked on the street, Hubble fixates on other dogs. 4/6/25:Hubble was at the front of the kennel with a soft body and a wagging tail. There is shredded linen on the ground of the kennel. He was easily leashed and pulls very hard out of the room. He is taken to the street where he continues to pull hard ahead of the handler. He pulls hard throughout the walk and is aloof with handler. Hubble relieves himself and pulls hard back to kennel where he is returned without issue. 03/30/25: Hubble is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed while distracted with treats and taken to the street for his walk. He exits kennel quickly and pulls slightly toward the dogs he passes in kennel. Once outside he pulls hard while walking and rarely stops to sniff on the street. He attempts to approach people he passes and is difficult to redirect. Throughout the walk, Hubble will jump towards the leash but does not bite it and whips his head around while jumping. He accepts treats during his walk that are tossed by handler and is walks with handler for a while before being brought back to the shelter. Upon returning he is clipped and brought back to kennel where he returns without issue. 03/23/25: Hubble is at the front of the kennel with a loose body and a wagging tail. He is easily leashed and taken out to the street. He walks ahead of the handler pulling moderate to hard. He relieves himself and sniffs around. Handler has Hubble sit for treats. Hubble is later returned to his kennel without issue. 3/16/25: Hubble is at the front of the kennel with a neutral body. He is easily leashed and pulls hard out of the room, barking at the other kennels. He is taken to the street where he spots a dog across the street and stares at the dog while passing. When the dog is out of sight, Hubble walks slightly ahead of the handler, pulling mildly. He relieves himself and is walked back to the shelter. Upon entering the building, he pulls very hard the whole way back to his kennel where he is returned without issue.
Summary (7):: 3/2/25- Hubble is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body and wiggly, he was giving slight grumbles when handler is leashing him. He pulls hard exiting the kennel and doesn't react to the dogs in passing. While in the elevator he makes grumble/ low whiny sounds. He is taken for a street walk. He pulls hard and handler has him come to them to sit, he takes treats hard. He sniffs around and when leash is taunt while pulling he struggles to breath. Handler makes him sit to catch a breath. As handler and Hubble are crossing the street he turns to handler and walks backwards then he starts to bite at the leash jumping up and tugging it while giving a low grumble. Handler presents a treat but he pulls more on the leash then comes to eat the treat. Handler continuously feeds Hubble treats to prevent him from going back to leash biting. He sniffs around again while pulling hard with a slight tense body. When handler is going to cross the street Hubble again starts to leash bite along with barking/ grumbling louder at handler while tugging. Handler tossed treats at him but he would continue biting the leash. When done crossing the street Hubble lets go of the leash due to restricting his breathing. He was reverse sneezing and handler rubbed his throat. Handler then use their slip lead to make a harness which Hubble stopped pulling as much, he spun his head once to bite the leash but didn't continue so for the rest of the walk. Handler gave him treats when returning. He allowed handler to undo harness and clip him, he was returned to kennel without issue. 3/2/25- ACS reported that Hubble has started to leash bite 2/13/25: It is reported on the behavior board that Hubble throws up due to pulling. 2/8/25: Hubble is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed and he pulls hard on the way downstairs for a walk outside. On the walk, he would pull hard to try to switch sides in front of the handler back and forth. He would bolt to each tree that was passed and would pull so hard that he would have to stop to catch his breathed . On the way back to kennel, he continued to pull hard up the stairs and threw up some of his food before entering his kennel room. He was able to enter his kennel with no issues. 1/15/25: Hubble is standing at the front of the kennel with a soft body. He takes treats through the bars and is easily leashed and removed from kennel. He is walked on the street where he remains soft bodied. He relieves himself then walks slightly forward ahead of handler. He will allow some brief petting and returns to handler without issue.
Date of intake:: 1/7/2025
Summary:: Wobbly
Date of initial:: 1/7/2025
Summary:: Body relaxed; easily examined; tail tucked under
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Hubble so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children. Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Hubble has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that Hubble should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior toward other dogs can be further addressed.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: It is reported that prior to intake Hubble was hard barking and growling towards handlers. In the care center Hubble has been observed to flail when reentering the building. This behavior is able to be redirected using treats and coaxing. It is important to move slowly with Hubble, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Hubble has been observed to fixate on other dogs while on leash. Hubble will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Arousal/ Leash Biting: Hubble has been observed to have a low threshold for arousal. He has been observed to quickly become aroused and jump up and bite the leash. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
