Animal Profile

Phantom

Hello, my name is Phantom. My animal id is #254984. I am a desexed male black cat at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 7 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 7/14/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance - moving.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Phantom is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Since being at the Care Center, he has also begun to have litter box accidents. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically, he has mild dental staining.

I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. A volunteer writes: Phantom has been trying to navigate the shelter since he came here in July. We heard he was tolerant of the cats and dog he lived with and though we wish he'd extend the same openness to the Care Center, we also understand it's been a pretty big leap and putting himself out there has never really been his style. In Phantom's previous home, he spent most of his time doing his own thing and he probably kind of liked it that way. It isn't always so easy for cats to do their own thing at the shelter, which is why we think Phantom might do best in a home that will go at his pace and give him lots of choices, time, patience, and love. ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 8/5 (note from 8/4) Staff went to clean Phantom's kennel. He is in a single kennel and locked himself out of his den. Staff opens up Phantom's den door and Phantom runs in. After Phantom is inside his den, staff closes his den and removes the den from the kennel to clean thoroughly. Once finished, staff put Phantom with his den back inside the kennel. Staff takes a peek at him; his ears are down and to the side, pupils are very dilated and drool is coming from his mouth. Staff leaves Phantom alone in order not to stress him out further. 8/6 Phantom is lying in a relaxed position in his den as staff approaches to clean his kennel. They toss some treats into his den and then close him in it and remove it to clean his kennel. He sits quietly as they finish and return his den. They open the portal door and he remains inside the den. They put more treats in the den and then leave him alone so as not to increase FAS. 8/15 Phantom is laying in his den as staff arrives. He remains in the den as cleaning procedures are completed, allowing staff to close and reopen the portal. He maintains neutral posture throughout the interaction. Treats are offered, but he does not show immediate interest in them. 8/30 Phantom is laying in his den as staff arrives. He remains in the den, allowing staff to close and reopen the portal to complete cleaning procedures. He does not show interest in offered treats or toys and evades contact from staff, but maintains neutral posture throughout the interaction. 9/11 Phantom is in his den as staff approaches. He is sitting with neutral posture and eyes closed. Staff puts treats into his den, which he ignores, then closes the portal so they can clean his kennel. After completing cleaning tasks, they set up a new hiding place for him and open the front of his den to get him into the kennel. He remains crouched in the den for a couple of minutes. Staff taps the den a few times and tilts it a little and he begins to slide, then darts into the new hiding place in the kennel. Staff leaves him there with treats and toys to enjoy. 9/19 Phantom is laying in his cubby as staff arrives. He has neutral posture and remains still as staff completes cleaning procedures. Treats are offered, but Phantom does not show immediate interest in them. He continues to lay, holding his position, seemingly unbothered by staff's movements around his kennel, but also uninterested in interacting. 9/30 Phantom is laying in his cubby with LB as staff arrives. Staff offers Am wet but he shows no interest. Staff is able to clean around him as he doesn't move from his cubby. Staff tries enticing him with treats but he shows no interest. Staff later returns and he is in the same spot still. Staff offers slow blinks which are returned and ends interaction to avoid FAS. **CONTINUE IN GAN**

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Timid,Skittish

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Phantom has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. Bite History: Phantom does have a bite history. A staff member was completing cleaning tasks when they noticed that Phantom had a toy stuck to his foot. The staff member slowly opened the kennel door and gently reached their hand inside to remove the toy, as Phantom appeared uncomfortable. During this process, Phantom turned his head and bit on the top of their right hand, resulting in two puncture wounds.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 10/26: Phantom is laying at the back of his cubby, head pressed against the wall. His pupils are rounded and ears sit upright. The assessor greets him softly and slow blinks at him. Phantom returns the slow blinks. Some treats are offered to him and he leans forward to sniff them. A scratcher tool is then extended out and he leans forward to sniff it. The tool is used to pet along his cheek and he tolerates the handling. When being pet along his body, Phantom whips his head around, hisses, and bites the tool. As the assessor is removing the tool, he lunges forward and bites again, holding onto the stick for a few seconds. Once he lets go and it is removed, he hisses and his ears go down. 9/26: Phantom is laying in his den with dilated pupils and tail wrapped around his body. The assessor greets him gently and slow blinks at him. He stares back. A scratcher tool is slowly extended out to him and he leans forward slightly to sniff it. The tool is used to pet along his back. Phantom quickly moves out of the way, hissing as his ears go down. The tool is rested down and when it is lifted again he hisses and moves to the opposite side of the kennel. 7/26: Phantom is laying at the front of his den with rounded pupils and slightly tilted out ears as the handler approaches. As the den cover is removed, Phantom pushes himself to the back of the den. He sits up and wraps his tail around his body. The handler gives slow blinks and Phantom blinks back. A scratcher tool is introduced, and as he notices it, he darts out of the den and then quickly turns around, darting back inside. The scratcher tool is rested near the portal and he stares at it. The handler gives more slow blinks and then picks up the tool, offering it out to Phantom. He sniffs it. He is given a few pets along his back and stares at the tool. He tolerates the pets. Phantom is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has been to swatting, biting, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
