Commander Nightwing is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Commander Nightwing arrived at the Care Center as a stray with no known history. Upon intake Commander Nightwing was noted to warm up to staff and allow all handling. Commander Nightwing has been reported to hard stare with tense body at dogs, and escalate to pulling toward, barking, and lunging. Additionally and although inconsistent, Commander Nightwing at times has also been observed to hard stare, bark and lunge at people while on leash. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I am playful and cute! I will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy.

Summary (5):: 11/22/25: Commander Nightwing is at the front of the kennel lying down. His water bucket is tossed around in the kennel. He stands up as the handler approaches with a soft body and wagging tail. He is easily leashed and taken out of the kennel. Nightwing is brought downstairs to the street where he walks besides the handler with mild pulling. He relieves himself a few times. Nightwing is then brought back to the shelter, he passes by dogs which he hard stares at for a moment. He is called away and is brought back inside. Commander Nightwing is then returned to his kennel without issue. 11/19: Commander Nightwing walks well on a leash harness. On his last few walks with volunteer handler, he did not pull and was easily redirected from most dogs (different sizes and distance). Though he can be vocal, he keeps a loose body and wags his tail. He likes stuffed toys, but prefers playing with someone and/or petting. 11/19/25: Commander Nightwing is reported to be easily redirected when leashed on harness. 11/17/25- Nightwing commander is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body, he is easily leashed and pulls hard exiting the room. While waiting for the elevator Nightwing sits and engages with handler as they give him treats. He is taken for a street walk. When exiting the drive way 2 MOPs walking are by with carts. Nightwing stayed by the handler taking treats keeping his focus on them. He has a moderate pull while sniffing around and is social with handler. He follows the command to sit and is rewarded. He allows handler to scratch his head, neck and rear. He is easily clipped and pulls hard returning to kennel, handler tosses in treats.

Summary (6):: 11/15/25: Commander Nightwing is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed while distracted with treats and taken to the street for his walk. He exits kennel pulling hard toward the dogs he passes but follows treats to the hall and waits at the side of the elevator. A staff member also enters the elevator and Nightwing pulls toward them attempting to sniff them but he is redirected with treats and sits in front of handler as he is fed treats. Outside, Nightwing pulls moderately and is hyper vigilant, he will stare at people passing on the street and when seeing dogs will dash forward and stare at them until they are out of sight. After a while he is brought back inside and his leash is clipped before he is brought back upstairs and returned to kennel without further issue. 11/15/25: Commander Nightwing is at the front of his kennel with a loose, wiggly body. When walking out the building, he sees other dogs but does not react. He allows pets from the handler. On the street, Commander walks ahead of the handler with no leash tension and shows no interest in passersby. He also turns and jumps on the handler with a soft body, allowing pets from them. When a passerby walks past with a large plastic, Commander sniffs the bag. As the person watches Commander, Commander then barks and lunges at them. The handler clips and shortens their leash for the remainder of the walk. Commander sees a passerby across the street and continues to look at them until they're out of sight. The handler is able to return Commander to his kennel with ease. 11/7/25: Commander Nightwing is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body upon approach. He is then easily leashed and removed from kennel, where he would slowly walk ahead of the handler on a loose leash. He is then taken out for a street walk, where he would have little to no pulling on his walk but would walk ahead with his ears pinned back and a slight low body. Commander would spot a dog but wouldn't engage and he would continue his walk with no issue. Commander would relieve himself and wasn't interested in the handler or any form of coaxing from them. He is then clipped and returned back to his kennel with no further issue. 11/6/25: Whiteboard notes Commander Nightwing is "well behaved"

Summary (7):: 11/3/25: While an ACS had Commander Nightwing in the yard he was observed to lunge and persistently bark with a tense body towards other dogs. ACS attempted to use treats and a squeaker to redirect him, which wasn't successful. A member from K9 Behavior enters the pen and takes Commander from them, he is then taken out for a street walk where he would have a hard pull ahead of him and remain hypervigilant on leash. As he walks on the street, his pull would become much harder as he begins to pant. Handler would call his name, he would look at the handler and then proceed to sit down. He was then rewarded with a treat shortly after, which he would take with a soft mouth. Commander would spot a dog at a distance and become tense as he watches them. He would begin to whine and handler has to muscle him away due to his fixation on the dog. Once the dog is out of his sight, he would continue the walk with ease. Shortly after, he is then clipped and returned back to his kennel with no further issues. 11/2/25: Staff reported that in the backyard Commander Nightwing is hypervigilant towards dogs and does not settle. He will lunge towards passing dogs and when kept away from the dog will thrash and alligator roll. He was also reported to occasionally turn towards the handler when doing so. 10/30/25: Commander is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is offered treats but ignores them, he allows leashing however and pulls hard out of kennel and to the street. While outside he passes people without issue but stares at them even once passed and is difficult to redirect, he displays similar behavior when seeing dogs. Commander walks for a bit with handler rarely stopping to sniff spots on the street before being brought back inside for his behavior assessment. After finishing he is brought back inside and returned to kennel without further issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Commander Nightwing so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity and resource guarding we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Nightwing has been obsvered to become slight tense and move away when approached with a toy. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Nightwing's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Anxiety: Nightwing is obsvered to be panting during his assessment and was noted to vocalize when a handler left the room. If Nightwing displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Nightwing has been obsvered to fixate and lunge towards people while on leash. Nightwing will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other people. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
