Winston
Hello, my name is Winston. My animal id is #242834. I am a male brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/2/2025.
Winston is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Winston arrived at the Care Center as a stray with no known history. Upon intake he warmed up to staff quickly and was treat receptive. Despite efforts to keep him comfortable, Winston has been showing a decreasing threshold for arousal and signs of deterioration in kennel. Winston has been observed to be leash biting with escalating intensity and is difficult to redirect. Recently Winston nearly chewed through a leash when a staff member was returning him to kennel. Winston has also been reported to chewing or pawing at the drain cover in his kennel at times. With staff he remains social and treat motivated when not over threshold. Medically, Winston is apparently healthy.

I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I am playful and cute! I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy!

When seeing other dogs, Winston increases leash pressure, pulling towards them, but doesn't react as he quickly disengages. he handler continues to toss treats to him. Winston also has no interest in passersby. Upon returning, the handler clips their leash and returns Winston to his kennel. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Winston so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity and poor impulse control we recommend an adult only home.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Winston has been obsvered to jump up on handlers in a social manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful Defensive: During his medical exam Winston growled prior to his MC scan. It is important to move slowly with Winston, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Winston is obsvered to fixate on other dogs with a tense body and high flagging tail. This behavior is difficult to redirect. Winston will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Winston is obsvered to jump up and bite the leash intensely. Winston is quick to grab the leash in their mouth. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
