Animal Profile

Yuki

Hello, my name is Yuki. My animal id is #253185. I am a male black brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 9 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/15/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- cannot afford to care for.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Yuki is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Yuki's owner stated, Yuki will lunge, bare his teeth, and snap at small animals. While in the Care Centers, Yuki has generally been a social dog who enjoys attention and petting; however, he has recently begun exhibiting deteriorating behavioral concerns. Staff have observed him spinning repeatedly both inside and outside of his kennel. At times, he will also jump very high, reaching as high as staff members' heads. Despite our best efforts to support him, Yuki appears to be struggling with the kennel environment. Medically, Yuki is apparently healthy.

Summary:: 5/22/26: Yuki greets another dog at the gate with a loose and wiggly body.

Summary (5):: 6/26/26: It is reported via whiteboard that Yuki walks in circles outside. 6/24/26: Yuki is observed to be pacing in a circle in his kennel while panting. The room is moderately busy while kennels are being cleaned on the opposite side of the room. He stops pacing when a staff member approaches and comes to the front accepting a treat. He then resumes circling. He is given a peanut butter lickimat. 6/23/26: Yuki is at the front of his kennel with a wiggly body. As the handler attempts to leash him, Yuki squeezes himself through the ajar door, jumping on the handler; the handler quickly pushes him off and closes the door. With the second attempt, the handler lures Yuki with a treat, which he eats with hard pressure, and takes him out the room. The handler then brings Yuki to the yard for playgroup (see dog-dog notes). In between the interactions, Yuki approaches the handlers with a soft body and jumps up very high to their faces; he also sits for treats and then jumps to eat the treats inside their treat pouches. He also allows pets, even on his belly. After the interactions, the handler clips their leash and returns Yuki to his kennel. 6/21/26: Yuki is at the front of the kennel with a soft body and wagging tail. He is jumping up and down at the front of the kennel. Handler uses a toy as a lure to leash him without issue. Yuki then jumps up and pushes his way through the door of the kennel towards the toy the handler is holding. Handler opens the kennel door and drops the toy. He picks up the toy and pulls hard out of the kennel room. Yuki is taken out of the kennel and taken out towards the street. He pulls hard on the street. Handler works on check-ins with Yuki. He takes treats firmly. Yuki walks ahead of the handler with a loose body. He stops occasionally to sniff various spots on the ground. Yuki relieves himself and walks back to the shelter. His kennel is not ready. Yuki is taken to the backyard where he is placed on a drag leash. Handler engages with him, they play fetch for a brief moment. Yuki is then walked back inside and is returned to kennel without issue. 6/20/26: (LATE ENTRY) Yuki is at the front of the kennel with a wiggly body and a wagging tail. He is jumping up and down in the kennel. Handler tries to leash him with treats which is not very successful. Yuki is leashed with a squeaky toy as a lure. The toy is tossed out of kennel as he exits the kennel. Yuki grabs it and pulls hard out of the kennel room and to the street. On the street, Yuki walks ahead of the handler holding the toy, squeaking it throughout the walk. He relieves himself a few times and is taken back to the shelter. Yuki drops it towards the end of the walk and is given another toy. He pulls hard back inside the building and towards his kennel where he is returned without issue.

Summary (6):: 6/21/26: Yuki greeted handler with a loose and wiggly body and front of kennel where he was easily leashed and pulled from kennel. Yuki was taken for a street walk where he pulled hard for the entirety of his walk. He was returned to kennel with no issue. 6/19/26 (PM): Yuki is reported to leash bite without being able to be redirected. The handler tosses treats and uses their squeaker, buut Yuki contiinues to bite and tug the leash, to the point of him almost getting loose. The handler then uses the pet corrector, but Yuki continues fixate on the leahs. The handler uses another leash to leash him and returns him to kennel. 6/18/26: It is reported that Yuki is bouncing off the kennel walks, finger painting his kennel, and hypersalivating. 6/17/26: Yuki is standing at the front of her kennel, neutral body. He becomes loose and wiggly as handler unlocks the kennel. He bounces up a few times on his front paws and spins in excitement before handler is able to secure the leash. He pulls hard to the street then settles in walking ahead of handler pulling with moderate pressure. HE responds to handler when called, istting for treats and jumping up in a social manner accepting pets. He is soft bodied throughout the walk with no reaction towards people passing. He is easily called away and sits for treats. HE leans in for petting. When walking back towards the shelter, Yuki pulls really hard, not as responsive to handler. HE goes into his kennel without issue and pulls hard towards the back where a tennis ball is located. 6/17/26: Yuki is at the front to his kennel with a wiggly body; as the handler goes to leash him, Yuki squeezes out the kennel, but the handler is able to properly secure the leash on him. While exiting the building, Yuki jumps up very high, at times bumping the handler. The handler brings Yuki to the yard for playgroup (see dog-dog notes). In between the interactions, Yuki exuberantly jumps on the other handlers; he also allows pets from them, and eats treats out of their pouches. Afterwards, the handler brings Yuki back to his kennel; however, as he enters it, he pulls right back out. Yuki pulls hard out of his kennel three times as the handler pulls him into it. The handler then tosses treats into the kennel and as Yuki enters to eat them, the handler slightly closes the door and removes their leash quickly.

Summary (7):: 6/11/26: It is noted on the whiteboard that Yuki walks better with a leash harness; he is also leash biting. 6/9/26: Yuki is lying on his bed in the back of his kennel and comes to the front with a loose body as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pushes out of the building door. He pulls hard out, but lightly on the street. He finds a toy and picks it up then drops it 20 ft later. He sits for treats and allows petting and leash clipping. He returns to kennel willingly and takes treats. 6/4/26: Yuki is vocalizing in his crate as staff approaches. He is leashed and the crate is held closed with a knee, but he immediately forces half of his body up and out of the crate. He busts out quickly, and by report of staff, pulled hard the entire walk. When returned to kennel, he is observed to be spinning in circles in his crate. He is panting. 6/1/26: Yuki is exuberant and spinning in his crate. He grabs his toy and drops it multiple times. He is panting. He is leashed and pushes hard and fast out of the crate. He pulls hard to and on the street. He is panting and drooling. He takes treats. He relieves himself. He returns to his crate willingly. 5/30/26: Yuki is observed to spin in his pop up crate as a staff member is in the room, but the room is not particularly active. 5/25/26: Yuki is at the front of his crate when the handler approaches. He is easily leashed. Once the leash is on, he pushes his way out of the popup crate. In the hallway when Yuki hears the word "dog," he spins around and looks in the approximate direction that the sound came from. On the street Yuki pulls moderately and does not react to dogs or people. When returning to the shelter, Yuki begins pulling hard. When seeing another dog, he also pulls hard towards them. When in front of his crate, Yuki balks and retreats. The handler tosses treats inside the crate, and he readily enters. 5/18/26: It is noted on the behavior whiteboard that Yuki attempts to flee. 5/18/26: Yuki is at the front of his kennel heavily panting as handler approaches. As handler opens the door to attempt to leash, Yuki would try to push past the handler and attempt to exit kennel. The kennel door is shut and leashing is attempted again, which is successful. Once removed from kennel he would pull hard and remain highly exuberant throughout his walk. Yuki would spot people and would begin to jump towards them with a neutral body. He would continue to do this multiple times throughout the walk.

Date of intake:: 5/15/2026

Summary:: Jumped up on handler, allowed all handling

Date of initial:: 5/16/2026

Summary:: Nervous, allowed all medical handling

ENERGY LEVEL:: Yuki is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Yuki.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity, we recommend an adult only home. No Cats: Due to lunging and snapping at cats we recommend a home with no cats. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Yuki's previous owner states that he will jump up often. During his assessment he was also observed to jump up often. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Anxiety: Yuki was observed to be pacing around the room during his assessment. If Yuki displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Yuki's previous owner states that he will lunge, bare teeth, snap, growl, hard bark, or attempt to bite when seeing skateboards or small animals. Yuki will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than skateboards and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Yuki has been observed to be highly rope reactive, this behavior is not able to be redirected easily. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
