Luesa Kole
Hello, my name is Luesa Kole. My animal id is #219134. I am a male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/12/2025, with the surrender reason stated as not a fit - too many animals already.
Luesa Kole is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 2/19/25 FB26 Resting on top of the den upon approach. Pupils dilated eyes wide, ears flat against his head. He sniffs the scratcher tool but slowly retreats and hisses. Avoids contact and ended the interaction to reduce stress. 2/22/25 Vol. When I raised the shoreline halfway and opened the kennel door, Luesa was on top of his den and hissed twice, flattening his ears. I returned with the treat on the tool and he again flattened his ears, pupils dilated, and scrunched up against the back of the kennel. He lifted his paw as if to swat and then swatted, sending the treat flying, then began to lick the treat off the bedding. Still a little spicy. 3/2/25 Vol. Resting on top of den with widely dilated eyes. Flinched and backed away when the tool approached but ate a cup of chicken, Temptations and squeeze-up when dropped on top of den. Stopped eating and swatted hard and fast at the tool with a refill of treats, scattering them everywhere. Then calmly continued eating the ones that landed nearby.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Luesa Kole was inside the den upon approach. Alert with eyes wide. Ears turned to the side. She watches from afar with a blank stare pupils dilated. Allows petting along the head and body with the scratcher tool through the side portal door. She remains frozen in place throughout the assessment. Luesa Kole tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
