Animal Profile

Mongo

Hello, my name is Mongo. My animal id is #227769. I am a desexed male chocolate dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 6/1/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal health - will need ongoing vet care.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Mongo is on the at-risk list for medical concerns. Mongo has a urethral prolapse that continues to bleed whenever he is excited or aroused. He also has a urinary tract infection and an enlarged prostate. He was neutered in care. He will need a surgical consult with placement to determine treatment for his prolapse. Behaviorally, he is very friendly and has allowed all medical handling.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I can go home today! I have lived with dogs in my previous home. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. Not only do I pull at heart strings, but I also pull on leash! I will need someone to help me with my leash manners. I am playful and cute!

Summary:: Mongo is currently unable to undergo a handling assessment due to his ongoing medical concerns. He was surrendered as an owner surrendered in the prior home, he was noted to be a social, affectionate couch potato. In the Care Centers, Mongo has allowed medical handling, showing a calm, accepts pets, sits on cue, food motivated, nervous during handling, and exam, but did tolerate it. He appears to be friendly and tolerant of most handling. His determination is reflected in the limited behavioral information we've gathered and observed. However, it’s unclear whether his behavior will remain consistent or if new behaviors may emerge once he is fully medically cleared. Positive reinforcement should be used when working with Mongo

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Mongo's potential challenges, we recommend that he be placed in a home with no children under 13.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: In his previous home, Mongo was observed guarding items by hovering over them with a tense body posture. This behavior suggests discomfort with having possessions approached or taken away. Training should focus on building trust through positive reinforcement, using trade-up techniques, and gradually desensitizing him to people near his valued items. Please the handout on Resource Guarding. House Soiling: Mongo was reported to use both wee wee pads and go to the bathroom outside in his previous home, but still had occasional accidents a few times a month. This indicates partial house training. A consistent bathroom schedule, supervision, and reinforcement for appropriate elimination can help improve reliability. Please the handout on House Soiling. Basic Manners / Poor Impulse Control: Mongo frequently jumped up in his previous home and has been observed attempting to mount medical staff in care, indicating poor impulse control. Training should focus on teaching alternative behaviors, reinforcing calm interactions. Please the handout on Basic Manners / Poor Impulse Control. Fearful: Mongo has shown fearfulness when startled or woken from sleep, suggesting sensitivity to sudden stimuli or transitions. A predictable routine, gentle handling, and avoiding abrupt interactions can help reduce fear responses and build his confidence. Please the handout on the decompression period. On-Leash Reactivity / Barrier Frustration: While on leash, Mongo has been noted to alert bark at other dogs, indicating reactivity or barrier frustration. Training should include desensitization to other dogs, focus-building exercises, and reinforcing calm behavior during walks to reduce reactivity. Please the handout on On-Leash Reactivity / Barrier Frustration.
