Carmello is on the emergency placement list due to her behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

KNOWN HISTORY:: Carmello was brought in with limited information on their behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 8/15/23 Lying in cat den upon approach, body and face hidden from view. He remains hidden as the kennel door opens and she does not respond when offered squeeze-ups and a catnip toy. Nervous boy, not interested in interacting at this time. 8/21/23 Crouched down on top of den, steps back when spoken to and opening door. Ignores treats offered, tilts ears, wide eyes, and back fur slightly pilo-erect. Allows gentle petting on the head and body but then he slowly climbs down and walks into the den to hide and avoid attention. 8/23/23 Crouched down on top of the kuranda bed with a tense body and wide eyes. Leans head forward to sniff treats offered and leans back when pet on the head and cheeks. Tolerates attention and stroking the body but remains nervous and fur slightly pilo-erect. 8/24/23 Lying on top of kuranda bed, body and face tense, pupils dilated and ears tilted. She makes and maintains eye contact when spoken to and she continues to watch me suspiciously as I gently offer treats. She remains too focused on me to eat the treats during our interaction and they are still there when I check on her shortly afterwards. I speak to her softly and slow-blink before ending the session. 8/26/23 Carmelo was on top of her kuranda bed, with wide eyes and flat ears. I put treats on the kennel floor but she did not step down. I spoke softly to her and her ears eventually rose back up. I didn't open the kennel door because she appeared to be very stressed and nervous. I ended the interaction and saw later that she had moved down to her bed on the kennel floor. I spoke to her for a while but she still seemed afraid, so I kept the door closed. Her left ear and eye appear to have some kind of injuries, so she may need some time until she feels more comfortable. 8/29/23 Hunched on top of kuranda bed upon approach, body and face tense and ears flat. She makes and maintains eye contact with a tense expression, but when I gently toss treats towards her she sniffs each one curiously, ears shifting forward. She will note eat them while I'm watching but when I lower her cage cover and check on her a few moments after I see that she's eating all of the treats! I slow-blink and speak to her softly. Will continue to build positive associations! 9/3/23 Carmello was at the front of the kennel when I lifted her kennel cover. She hissed and went to the top of the kuranda bed, with her ears down, looking fearful. I placed Squeeze Up in a dish next to her and spoke softly. She gradually raised her ears up and ate the treat. I covered the kennel and came back a few minutes later. Carmello had knocked the dish off the kuranda bed, onto the kennel floor. I placed another serving of Squeeze Up on the kennel floor and lowered the cover. When I returned to check in, she had eaten that as well. She hissed when I lifted the cover the second time, so I left her alone. -GAN

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Carmello was hunched on top of their cat den as the assessor approached, body and face tense and tail wrapped tightly around feet. Carmello made eye contact when spoken to with dilated pupils and they backed away as the kennel door opened. Carmello toelrated petting along their head and back with the assessor’s hand while flattening their ears and leaning away from the hand with squinted eyes. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. Carmello displayed similar behaviors during her re-assessment. Carmello tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He/she may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his/her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
