Dicey Nicey
Hello, my name is Dicey Nicey. My animal id is #245672. I am a desexed female black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 14 years old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 1/15/2026.
Dicey Nicey is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. She is a sweet, geriatric cat with hyperthyroidism that needs a home to administer her chronic medication.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...
A volunteer writes: Dicey Nicey is a senior in need. Are they not all? But some more than others...It seems that Dicey Nicey was left behind when her family moved away. Hoping I guess to get back to her past life, she stuck around for an unknown period of time, facing hunger, the cold, the rain and competing for food with younger and stronger cats.That is when a Good Samaritan drew the line. Time to go to safety and Dicey Nicey was brought to the Manhattan Care Center where beside being found hyperthyroid, she was in very poor condition(emaciated, dehydrated, severely unkempt and almost edentulous). She could have other medical issues as she is an elderly and has been tremendously neglected. One more daily reason to say....What is wrong with this world? Hyperthyroidism is treatable. Dicey Nicey is a compliant patient and takes very well her medicine. Her appetite is more than great. She drinks plenty. Her litter box etiquette is not perfect but the poor gal went through a mill. Eating and feeling safe are her priority.Having seen her 2 days ago and today, she does look brighter although she is a very fragile senior lady. Dicey Nicey has the heart of many but she does not know that as she still feel unsure and untrusting. Survival is her goal, right now. Will her Lucky Star shine bright? p> Dicey Nicey tolerates attention and petting but appears to be moderately fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that she go to a home with some cat experience preferred and be well counseled in fearful cat behavior. This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Dicey Nicey is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow
KNOWN HISTORY:: Dicey Nicey was brought in as a stray; there is no known information on her behavior history in a home environment.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Sweet,Timid
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Dicey Nicey should be given a slow introduction to the home, one room at a time starting in a small room like a bathroom with food, litter and water because behaviors seen at the Care Center [fearful, hides, needs a slow approach] strongly suggest that she will hide if allowed. Interact with her in this room until she seems sufficiently confident that you feel you can introduce her to the next part of the home without running the risk that she will hide. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to help introduce your cat to the home.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 2
RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children
Recommendations comments:: Dicey Nicey has displayed fearful behaviors and may be intimidated by young children. No children under age 5 recommended, respectful older children only. Counselor discretion.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Dicey Nicey is laying in the back of her den, facing the back wall. When the den door is lifted, she looks at the assessor with dilated pupils, beginning to stress meow. She tolerates all petting with the scratcher tool but is tense when pet, flinching and continuing to stress meow. With a few minutes of soft talking, she allows petting directly with the assessor's hands, flinching on initial contact before relaxing. She is not able to be coaxed out of the den, so pickup is not able to be attempted but she does allow light pressure on the sides of her abdomen and under her chest without issue. Dicey Nicey tolerates attention and petting but appears to be moderately fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that she go to a home with some cat experience preferred and be well counseled in fearful cat behavior.
